The Half-Life 2 Stuttering Problem (Solved)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Looks like a Half-Life 2 patch is in the works and should be released within the day. It is supposed to address the issue of stuttering that is affecting a lot of players.

This site is a collection of information on a problem with Half-Life 2 that has plagued many players of this otherwise excellent game. This problem is characterized by a sudden massive drop in frame rate when turning corners or moving into new areas of the game. These drops are usually accompanied by looping or stuttering sound during the frame rate drop which is how most people become aware of the problem. Aside from these isolated drops in frame rate, the game is otherwise perfectly smooth. These sudden drops kill the immersion and lead to a very frustrating experience. Below you will find additional details on this problem, some theories, and all responses from Valve on this problem.

Just received the following email from Erik Johnson at Value. The patch should come out no later than tomorrow.

We've found a fix for this problem, and we're planning on shipping it no later than tomorrow.

has this been released yet? I'm not familiar with Steam, so I don't know if the game is updated or not. All I know is I'm still having the damn stuttering problem

Hardly looks like a real solution. Just a work around.

Yeah they put it out late Wednesday night. I noticed a big difference after it applied, especially in the final levels of the game. But it does still stutter on my box whenever it does an autosave or a level load.

Would this have anything to do with the image stutter I get when I round the corner after skidding across the pipes in Water Hazard? No sound glitches happen, and if turn around and go the other way, backwards thru the level, it still works, but it treats the stutter as a solid wall, so I can't progress. Help me, I'm a pathetic mess. I worked ten hours for this two weeks wait til' salary, just to buy this game, and this is not funny.
