Looks like Microsoft is abandoning Windows 2000 and leaving us to fend off the vulnerabilities on our own.
A source close to Microsoft today sent me documentation about an Update Rollup for Windows 2000 that the software giant will release in 2005 in lieu of a Service Pack 5 (SP5). "The Update Rollup will contain all security-related updates produced for Windows 2000 between SP4 and the time when Microsoft finalizes the contents of the Update Rollup, and a small number of important non-security updates," the documentation reads. "Because Microsoft believes the Update Rollup will better meet the needs of customers than a new service pack, there will not be a Service Pack 5 (SP5) for Windows 2000. Therefore, SP4 becomes the final service pack for Windows 2000."

Mainstream support for Windows 2000 is supposed to end in June 2005, yet there are still unpatched vulnerabilities left that Windows XP SP2 already has fixes for. The architectures are so much the same, there is no reason these fixes shouldn't be available already.
MS is trying to push everyone into Windows XP just to be protected from spyware. A problem they're mostly responsible for. Yeah, fat chance that I'll ever dish out money for a Microsoft Operating System ever again.

dammit, i love win2k. and never had any problems with spyware or viruses. but every winxp machine i touch crashes within like 5 minutes.
oh well maybe ill get windows xp whenever they come out with an edition that doesnt hold my hand through everything. its too damn slow. wtf is the professional edition for anyway if it still has wizards for EVERY GODDAMN THING.
and i really hate how when i change an icon font on the desktop i have to go through like 10 clicks just so i can see what it looks like and try something else.

Fortunately Windows 2000 uses the same drivers as Windows XP. So it should be safe to use Windows 2000 for gaming for a long time. The unpatched vulnerabilities are all Internet Explorer related. Fortunately we have Firefox.
