War 3 sends me back to desktop

Just purchased War 3 pack. Seemed to install without a problem. When I double click on icon it shows splash screen for about 10 seconds then black screen for about 5 seconds then sends me back to desktop. I'm running XP with a pentium 4 3.0 gig, Audigy 2zs soundcard, ATI Radeon X700 with 256 video ram, gig and a half regular ram. It's a new Gateway computer. Downloaded all updates for game and drivers for hardware. Called Blizzard last night and they couldn't help. Thanks, Jon Locke

Using Windows Explorer, go to your Warcraft III directory and rename the "movies" directory to something else. This makes the game bypass the intro movie; most crashes like this at startup are intro-movie related. Post back with your results.
What did Blizzard suggest?

NegotiatorSmith...you're a genius! I owe you. Blizzard checked sound card and video card and had me enter new commands in the desktop shortcut properties. Also tried lowering video resolution and disabling the sound card. Finally sent me an email asking me to create a dxdiag.txt and an msinfo.txt and send the results to them for further study. Thanks to you it's working great. I appreciate you taking the time.
All the best,
Jon Locke

Glad to hear it's working, however, you'll miss out on the movies (if you haven't seen them already). Since the trick worked, it means you're having a codec issue - some other video or audio codec you have installed is causing the crash. Uninstall any codec packs like Nimo's and see if you can view the movies properly.
You may be able to view the movies with Windows Media Player if you can't make the crash go away. Simply double-click on one of the movie files and choose to view it with WMP.

I tried viewing the movies with windows media player and real player with no luck. The Divx player, however, worked fine. The movies are really impressive. I'm glad you recommended that I try to watch them. I just wish I could get them to play in the game. I deleted real player, musicmatch, and divx but there was no change. I reloaded Divx just to be able to watch the movies. Now the default player for the movies is set to Divx and I'm not sure how to change it back to the original game default. Do you think that Divx could be the problem? I did a "codec search" and came up with about 30 files that refer to codec on my hard drive. Most were in windows directories and at least one was in Creative. It doesn't look like I have the Nimo codec pack. If I can't get it to work that's okay. I'm really glad to just have the game up and running.

By default, there is no player associated with the War3 movies, but it doesn't matter if the DivX player is associated with them. If you want, in an Explorer window, you could do Tools > Folder Options > File Types and remove the association.
Deleting codec files via Explorer isn't recommended; instead, go to Add/Remove Programs and look for anything codec-related there.
If you continue to talk to Blizzard, they should be able to analyze your msinfo.txt file and tell you the exact codec that's causing the problem.
Oh, and it's not the DivX codec, I have it installed on my machine and the movies play fine in-game.
