MU says it's up to students to ask if they want their contact information off a military call list. The US army recruiters' office in Columbia says it's used university call lists for years and even gets lists from high schools, but as KOMU first reported Thursday, students complained when they recieved automated telephone calls to their cell phones and spam e-mail to their university-provided e-mail accounts. Today MU officials said it's the students' responsibility to ask to have their name taken off the call list, not the university's responsibility to ask if they want to be included. "If that request is made then we will respond accordingly" said MU registrar Brenda Selman. "But they do need to come in or send it in the mail because we have to have the student's signature." MU says about a hundred students a year request to be taken off of the military call list.

I've had enough recruiters bang on my door in High School. At least the ear-rape in HS over the phone was more personal than a prerecorded message.

Shit like that makes me glad I'm a Canadian living in Canada.

this seems a bit backwards. since when is it mandatory that a school report the name of all students to the government? isn't my having to register for the draft enough?

That is ridicilous! Recruiters resorting to spamming!? I'm glad I was never part of that battalion.

I don't find it unusual at at to see this. In fact, I would be surprised if the government wasn't doing it.
MU of course, is a land grant university, and as such has had a close relationship with the U.S. government on lots of projects. Lots of bucks in grant monies you know from Uncle Sam. In return you wink and look the other way should Sam decided to fondle the cheerleaders.
I remember when it was required that while in the university you had to be part of the R.O.T.C. We male students would all pile out of bed at a ridiculous hour when most normal students would just be getting home and get all dressed out in our military outfits ready for inspection and then we would march. All over the the quadrangle. March. March. March.
You high schoolers would best be staying out of trouble too, you know. Back when Nam was heating up, you got in trouble, for racing, fighting, or drinking...you got a choice... county jail time or the military service. Either way your ass was grass. Don't think they won't we offering you guys the same option soon only it will be to the middle east you will go this time.
The Draft? no way. um...wait a minute...aren't they debating that very thing in Congressional committees right now? who knows...if they can keep you for an extra year over your allotted time in Iraq, no reason why they can't or won't draft a few newbies to go over there and keep those convoys rolling. How ironic that so many years after the fact they are using national guardsmen in actual combat situations...I wonder what Bush would be doing if he were a young priviledged man with influencial backers in today's guard knowing he would have to go to Iraq.
