Pixel Shader Support

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ARMY RANGER

Like other peoples posts, I have a 64 MB DDR NVIDIA Geforce 4MX 420 with TV out(DELL). This does not provide enough pixel shader support for my splinter cell game, what do I have to buy and where do I get it to fix this problem?Basically, whats your best solution?

Posted by: quiksilver87

how do you know that it doesnt provide enough pixel support? is it giving you errors? Is there something with the specs tha tyou found? Are you sure that is the problem?

Posted by: ARMY RANGER

yes, Im positive that it is the problem because when i try to run the game it shuts down and says i do not have enough Pixel Shader Support to run my game.

the lowest end card you can use is a geforce 4. get one of those.

that will be dx8 compliant and play fine

The GeForce4 MX is really a beefed up GeForce2, it is quite an old architecture.
Try to get a cheap Radeon 9600 or 9700 or if you want to stay with NVidia get
an FX5200 or higher.

Well, it seems like you will need a new graphics card. Even if you get that one working Splinter cell will stil run slow. What is your budget for a new Graphics card?

Posted by: ARMY RANGER

Im not sure what my budget is because i dont know what anything cost, i didnt even know what pixel shader support was until yesterday! a friend said he bought a voodoo card 3 years ago for $100 and would sell it for $30, should i buy it?

Posted by: goboddog

nooooooo def not....you could prob get the geforce ti 4200 128 meg on ebay for not much more if you dont want to spend a fortune.... also dont bother with the fx 5200 its a waste of time i have the ti 4200 got a fx 5200 and put my ti back in because its better...you can get an fx 5700 for less than £100 if you want to spend a bit more

The Voodoo3 does not have pixel shaders and I wouldn't pay more than $5 for it.

You can probably get a Sapphire Radeon X600 for a little of $70 which is a respectable card for it's price range, it goes for $130 here in Canada.
An FX5700 goes for about $80, it goes for $160 in Canada.

The X600 is probably the best price/speed ratio in my opinion.

VOodoo...lol...I think that company stopped making cards a long time ago...I would say ti 4200....very good card! you could get it for a very good price...around 30-40$....try newegg.com
They have some of the best prices on the net....
ummm...i dont know why they have such a ridiculous price for that card though...best bet would be ebay..

dont get an fx card. either ati 9x00pro or geforce 4 ti4x00 for $100 or less

want something better? 9700 pro
something better? 9800 pro
something better? 6800

Posted by: ARMY RANGER

So, is there one type that everyone agrees on? lol

Posted by: gmackay1

Can't answer the question until you tell us how much you are willing to spend.

Posted by: Ocean

exactly, my cards are sequentially better at higher price points

Posted by: ARMY RANGER

probably $100

Ok here's the deal depending on what kind of bus your motherboard has, AGP or PCI-E.
Some cards come with 128MB of RAM, others with 256MB. Go for the much cheaper 128MB.

1. The Radeon 9600 AGP goes for about $70 US. It has 4 pixel shaders and 2 vertex shaders.

2. The Radeon 9800 AGP goes for about $100 US. It has 8 pixel shaders and 4 vertex shaders.

3. The Radeon X600 PCI-E goes for about $70 US. It has 4 pixel shader, 2 vertex shaders. Similar to the 9600 but with a superior design.

4. As far as NVidia goes the only worthwhile card is their latest cards the GFX 6600/6800.
I only see one card in the $100 range and that's the GFX 6600TD PCI-E with 128MB.

For NVidia don't even bother with anything below a GFX 6600 since the old architecture of the GFX 5900 and older cards are not worth it. They are inferior to ATI, run hot, are loud and use lots of power. ATI doesn't suffer from these problems.

If you have an AGP motherboard your forced to go with the older Radeon 9600 or 9800 since I believe the newer ATI and NVidia cards only come in PCI-E versions.

those prices are not what they go for, some of those are stripped down LE or SE versions' price at their cheapest.

a refurbished 9700 pro or a new 9600 pro are pretty much the stretching of your budget

if you wanna skip anisotropic filtering and high resolutions 16x12, a ti4200 should outpeform the 9600 pro.

and i doubt this would be for e a pci-e motherboard

I'm converting from Canadian currency and different variations of cards will go for different prices so give me some slack here.

dont know where the info ever1 is getting comes from?????? firstly the ti 4200 wont out perform the 9600 check any site with bench mark results although the xfx ti 4200 comes close cos its been clocked by the manufacturer to perform up to the ti 4600....also tell me where u can buy ANY of the new generation cards for $100 which is about £60 ill buy hundreds and become rich overnight lol.... also the pcie issue basically doubles an agp 4x to 8x you dont nes have to have a bang up to date mthrboard as long you support prob 8 x agp you will be fine for most cards as the cards support the new tech you dont have to have it ive just tested a new 6600 gt in my pc and it worked fine my mthrboard is over a year old and doesnt support pcie......just think about what you need mate the info on all nvidea cards being a waste of time is piffle they all perform about the same to a degree...the only cards i would avoid would geforce mx series and the fx 5200 series other than that they will all perform well obv the the better card you buy the better it will perform.. avoid ati 9200series other than that again it depends on how much you want to spend... i would also say to try and avoid all the le or se versions as they are usually just stripped down versions of the original card....ALWAYS CHECK THE CARDS REC SPEC

and for comparison of cost vs fps without anisotropic filtering
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/gr...ages/image3.gif

in non dx9 games the ti 4200 is great bang for buck, without high resolutions and anisotropic filtering. slightly better stability than the 9600pro also.

and yes, definately check the cards specs. just cause it says 9800 _E doesnt make it perform like a 9800 pro or even close to it.
