Inspiron 5000 shutting off all power

I have a Dell Insiron 5000 Laptop. I am the original owner and it has worked great until about one month ago. A few times a day it will shut off completely without warning. It's like pulling the plug on a desktop system. It doesn't go through the normal shutdown routine and kills all the power at once. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm gaming or surfing the net or just reading email. It's random.
The power supply light stays on though which tells me the power cord is ok. I have 3 hard drives and two power supply cords. I also have 3 batteries. I tested this machine with each hard drive, batteries and cords. The problem persists with each one so I assume it's in the motherboard somewhere.
It sometimes runs for hours without shutting off. Other times it shuts off 5 minutes after I turn it on. It doesn't seem to be a heat problem because the fan runs normally and is un-abstructed. The thing has always been a warm Laptop and I don't notice any accessive heat other than the normal amount.
I ran Dell diagnostics on all tests of all hardware and it says all hardware passed all tests! How can that be?
This is really frustrating because I can't trust it while doing something that will be erased if the power goes off.
Anyone please help if you can.

Have you checked for viruses? The blaster worm is a likely candidate.

I have a similar problem with my Inspiron 5000: it won't pass the POST test after I press
the power button. I called Dell's tech support. They told me that I may have a bad
motherboard.

I can say, from experience, that there would have been some warning, to the tune of; "Blah, blah, blah, your computer will shutdown in 60 seconds, blah, blah, blah." Unless of course one of the newer strands gives no warning.
Still, a virus check couldn't hurt. Might be a different virus altogether.
Using too much power isn't an issue with laptops is it? Might pay to see if it does it without as many peripherals put in, although i doubt that's the reason.
Any warnings of battery failures? Laptop batteries are pretty sketchy, so i've heard, if it's over 2 years old, that might be the problem too.
