HL2 Install problems

I have the UK Collector's Edition. I've been trying to install it, and have tried both with and without Steam running.
The installer works all right for a while, but when I get to the DirectX check (which helpfully informs me that I already have DX9.0c) the Next button ceases to function. That's followed shortly after (anything between a few seconds and two-three minutes) by the desktop crashing down to a four-bit, 640x480 box and a dialogue popping up with dire warnings. They vary from time to time, but usually go on about "invalid devices" and "critical device failures". Then I have to reboot to get my desktop back.
I've tried the utterly useless VU support, and nothing seems to work. Anyone have any suggestions?
I am not impressed with Valve's latest effort....

To be frank, that sounds more like a DirectX and windows installer problem to me. Try a DxDiag and post the results here.
You can always register your CD key through Steam, and download the content through that. At least, I think you can.

Tried that. DX seems to be working (shows up as 9.0b, despite running the 9.0c installer on the DVD), but my graphics card is causing trouble.

Can't - it won't let you register a key except during the install procedure, apparently.
Still, can't do anything now; this morning I could only get it to boot in safe mode, and now it won't even do that. I get a big rounded rectangular blob with a sort of gaussian fade to black around the edges, and then it crashes. I'm not pleased.

Well, the corruption turned out to be a problem with the graphics card - with that finally replaced under warranty, it no longer crashes my computer. But I still can't get past that bloody DirectX check screen. I've got the full DX9.0c runtime installed, working perfectly according to DxDiag. Valve helpfully says I should free up 4.5GB, run Disk Cleanup and defrag the drive. It's all done, and I've got 4.9 GB free. And it still won't work.
So at the moment I've thrown away £40 on a game that won't work from a company that refuses to admit that it won't work.
Help!
