Reuters has some news about the MPAA going after Bittorrent servrs which display Torrents for copyrighted movies.

Hollywood's major studios intend to escalate their battle against illegal movie downloading by targeting the popular BitTorrent network and those who operate its servers, the movie industry's lobbying arm is set to announce.

The civil suits against server operators marks the next step in the Motion Picture Assn. of America's (MPAA) anti-piracy campaign, which started last month with lawsuits against individuals who shared movies on peer-to-peer services.

The MPAA estimates that the studios lose about $3.5 billion annually to physical piracy like bootlegged DVDs but does not have a ready figure for Internet-related losses.

3.5 Billion? I highly doubt it. These are people who most likely wouldn't have purchased the DVD's to begin with. All I can figure is they think whoever gets a bootleg copy, would have baught it if there was no other option.

Then again, pirating is horribly bad in some Asian countries. Which might account for most of the total.

How can they sue the sites with the torrent files? They arent hosting the actual movie.

Aiding and Abetting copyright violators. They must pay.

I don't think all this legal action will be effective as it was with Napster and it's ilk. There are way too many coutries which someone could host a bittorrent server that the MPAA would have no power over. And targeting users would also be tougher due to the nature of bittorrent.

It's funny cause even if they shut down suprnova and .torrent file hosts, suprnova is working on a serverless torrent client where you search and find torrents within the app itself. No servers, no one to sue.
