My first time on the forum so in advance thank you to anyone who can help me.
I am having grave problems with my PC. The details of the PC are:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Motherboard - V.V266B VT8366-8233-6A6LVJIBC-00
Mem - 256Mb
Hard Disk - Maxtor 2F0x0J0 39.2Gb
Vid Card - NVidia GeForce MK200
Sound - Avance AC'97 for VIA
XP Pro
Until earlier today my computer has been shutting down whenever it feels like it - it doesn't matter how long it has been on for it can shut down immediately or hours later. The fans etc. keep running but the screen stays blank and I have to press reset.
I have tried reinstalling everything - windows, drivers etc. but to no avail and it is getting worse by the second.
Today i reinstalled windows but no change and now to cap it all, the graphics card is not showing up in the display adaptors. Now there is nothing there and everything moves in slow motion.
If i try and install a new hardware device the only display adaptors it finds are ATI which i think are inbuilt to the motherboard.
Also it tends to have a high processor temp. - 60C+
Any ideas.
Additional info. I recently brought the PC from the UK to S America and it passed through the XRay machines - could this have corrupted it?
I had to change the PSU to conform with 110V instead of 240V - the PSU is a MEGA 450ATX

It's very well possible for an X-Ray machine to damage a CMOS EEPROM or flash memory device. However, it usually takes a level a lot higher than used by airport scanners. If it was on the brink of failing, certainly an airport X-Ray machine could send it over the edge. Some airports which use more powerful X-Ray machines tend to avoid scanning laptops for this reason.
I think your problem is heat though. Moving from the U.K. to South America is enough of a climate change to increase your system temps. And 60C is really high for an 1800 XP. Investing in an extra case exaust will probably help. And blowing out any dust in the CPU heatsink with a can of air should also help lower CPU temp a bit as well.

thank you for your reply
my computer is a pc not a laptop so it went through the xray machine for suitcases not hand luggage so it could have been much stronger
however you might be right about it overheating - climate not too much of an issue as Bogota is high up and stays cool all year round.
could be the psu.
any ideas or hints on the display adaptor issue?

You might want to check your BIOS settings. See if anything has changed. The fact that you're still getting to a desktop is a good sign the video card is ok at least. Also, you might as well disable the onboard video if you're not using it.
If it does turn out your BIOS is corrupted, reflashing the newest BIOS may help. It depends on what kind of damaged was sustained though. Data corruption can be fixed, but not hardware corruption.

hmm...wierd...that is exactly what has happened to my pc that i just built. The screen just turns COMPLETELY BLACK...but the everything else is running! This would happen randomly just as you said!!!!!
Well, i have come to the conclusion that it is most probably my wireless adapter(linksys). It seems as though everytime i connect to the internet by enabling my connection(not dialup) my pc suffers from these random freezes...sometimes it happens 2-3 minutes after the enabling sometimes around a hour...I called my GPU tech support and i tried everything possible...it didnt work out...i still havent tried removing my wireless adapter card and running the cable directly to the computer because i am going to move quite soon, and i dont want to go through all the hassel...
I am running XP pro and an AMD proc....maybe our problems are related??Do you have a wireless adapter?

just to say that i got my graphics card back up and running - i was missing the via 4 in 1 drivers for some reason
i have a feeling still that the problem is the psu so i'm off today to buy a new one and see what happens.
it could also be a loose connection as a minute ago i kicked the side of the case and it rebooted
i have a cable connection to a router through an ethernet cable
let's wait and see what happens

Maybe those times your PC shuts down after a while, is due too high temp on the CPU?
You should get a exhaust fan or / and maybe a more efficient cpu cooler, just in case?
At least it wont do any harm.

This might sound wierd but try disabling your connection right after you enter windows...Then see if it freezes! Please try this...because if this solves the problem like it did for me...we might have the same problem...
Do you have a wireless router? or is a cable directly linked?
I doubt that it is related to heating issues because the pc would turn off...He is saying that everything is still running! not just the monitor! And it wouldnt turn off imediately? I wouldnt eliminate it as a possibility though!
I know that it cant be the problem in my case because i have 7 fans! and 1 of them is 120mm!
