Yahoo News has some info on a critical XP SP2 vulnerability that was just adressed. Time to run Windows Update if you're on dial-up.
Microsoft Corp. has quietly released a "critical" Windows XP (news - web sites) Service Pack 2 update to fix a serious flaw in the Windows Firewall utility.
"After you set up Microsoft Windows Firewall in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you may discover that your computer can be accessed by anyone on the Internet when you use a dial-up connection to connect to the Internet," the company said in a knowledge base article.
The latest bug, which only affects users with dial-up Internet connections, occurs because of the way that Windows Firewall interprets local subnets when the "My network (subnet) only" option is used.
Because of the way that some dialing software configures routing tables, Microsoft said the firewall sometimes interprets the whole Internet to be a local subnet. "This can let anyone on the Internet access the Windows Firewall exceptions," the company warned in the article.

Perhaps before updating service pack 2 from security flaws, they should work on the issue of SP2 turning your system into a paperweight.

Yet another reason not to buy XP.
As if my poor, freelancing, unprotected system didn't have enough to worry about.

Just curious, why do you feel SP2 to turns '... your system into a paperweight'?

Ever tried having it on a business network?
*Shudder*
It is a blight on networks, and it makes XP even more sluggish and intrusive than it already is. I'd concider it unusable if it wasn't for all the neat tweaks and hacks out there.
