Question on my computer

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Can someone help me out and tell me if I can run a ATI Radeon 9200 on a Dell optiplex GX150. Thanks in advance.

Should work. An E Mail to Dell would yield a definite answer. As long as you have an AGP port, you should be ok.

According to what I read in Dell forum, ATI Radeon low profile 9200 SE will work on your machine.

Do you think that my computer has enough watt power to run the card? This is the card that I'm planning to get at circuit city. http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/Sear...961%7CComputers

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

It's an older card so you should be ok. Just make sure it's at least a 300Watt power supply.

Posted by: wordno

I think I have 240 watts. I'm assuming that it won't work then.

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

It might still work, but stressing a PSU too much usually isn't good. I wouldn't risk it personally. The safe bet would be to get a new 350Watt PS or bigger.

Posted by: wordno

How much would one of those cost? I'll be willing to buy one since I want to play world of warcraft pretty badly.

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

I have seen some for as little as 20$ but you don't want those. I highly recommend you get a good namebrand like Enermax, Thermaltake, or Antec though. A good one will probably run you 50$ or more from one of those brands. But it's definitely worth it.

Well I'm gonna get the ATI Radeon 9200 and see if it works. If not then I'll buy one. What are the risks involved if I try to use the card? And where can I find a 350 watt PS from?(places like best buy and circuit city)

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Best Buy carries Antec power supplies on their website. A call to the retail store close to you might be a good idea to check and see if they have any in stock.

As for the risks, usually you'll get system instability. Especially in games and other graphic intensive stuff that stresses the hardware. Eventually a power supply will just usually stop working but in some cases they can belch smoke and die or even catch fire. (Although the risk is low.) A stressed power supply usually will not last long when overtaxed either.

So It sounds like the card will run for only a short time. This sucks, since it's christmas time I'm pretty broke so I can't afford to buy both since I have yet to finish christmas shopping and my money is almost all gone. I'll have to wait till christmas is over until I can buy the 350 watt PS. I'll buy the video card though. If one of those risks you just mentioned should happen when I buy the V card will it mess up my computer to the point where it can't be fixed?

circuit city carries antec PS.

its possible to have something disasterous happen. but its much more likely that it just wont work very well. unless you have something truly irreplaceable on the drives, i wouldnt worry too much about that.

Posted by: wordno

I gave my dad money to go get me the video card and he accidentaly picked up The PCI version of the ATI Radeon 9200. But it might not be a bad thing. Could the PCI version work better on my computer than the AGP version?

Posted by: redwench

not likely. it might use less power since it cant receive the data as fast, but will definitely have significantly degraded performance. pci cards are designed for boards without a working agp, theyre certainly not a good substitute.

But the risks that were stated before can't happen can they? I've put the card and so far everything seems to be working fine.
