I am trying to upgrade a Compaq 1200 12XL410 notebook computer to the maximum memory it supports which is 320 MB. It has an on-board 64 MB chip and one memory expansion slot. That is supposed to be able to accept a 256MB PC100 chip. When I put in that 256 MB chip it is recognized and works fine, but only as 128 MB of memory.
Why is this happeinging and how can I get the full 256 MB. Please help!

A BIOS update for the laptop is your best bet. Did you buy the memory from Compaq?

Thanks for the reply. I got the memory from MemoryX.com It is labeled
256MB PC-100
MSPB63S-68XT2
EBE
S/N: S45002801001
I spoke to the now India based HP support team and they say to purchase it from HP of course and they recommend their 244399-001 Memory S.O. DIMM 256MB. THey can not say anything about memory not purchased from HP.
I updated the BIOS with the update that is on the HP site but it is a very old updata. 2000 I think. And it did not make any difference. I am sure there were so many other softpaqs for the 12XL410 before HP took over Compaq but now they seem to have mostly disappeared. So if anyone knows of a more recent BIOS update and where I can download it from please let me know.
Thanks for your help

Yeah memory standards for laptops is abysmal at best. And usually you get charged more by buying them from the laptop company in question. Some companies will even void your warranty if you buy memory from another source other than them.
The crucial website is a good way to find compatible dimms for motherboards and laptops. I searched your model and a couple came up there.

I don't think you're going to be able to get a newer BIOS than that because of its age. There are some settings in your BIOS that may help though. Try disabling quick post. There also may be a setting in there somewhere that deals with memory that may help.
