Can you reformat a single partition?

I just installed a new hard drive on my system (XP). Both drives are up and running and working fine. I configured my new drive as my boot drive, so I copied all my old C: files onto the new drive, which took over as the C: drive.

However, I've been trying to delete the duplicate copies of all the system files off of the old drive, but 3 files just won't delete. I don't like this clutter. So I'm thinking of just reformatting. BUT since my old drive was partitioned into 3 sections, and I still want all the files that are in the other two partitions, could it be possible to reformat ONLY the one partition that has those pesky non-deleting files? It was my old C: partition.. the other 2 still have games and media files. Could this be done?

If not, I'll ask more about the files that won't delete.. maybe someone could help me delete them. I just simply want a clean-slate drive for extra storage!

If more info is needed about the specific drives or my setup, I'd be happy to provide. Thanks so much, in advance!

Yep, go for it.
Partitions are, in almost every aspect, seperate drives, which you can do as you want with without harming the remainder of the drive.

If you are still a bit worried about it, get yourself a boot-disk and delete them from DOS. I think there's a "Mini-windows" out there, that boots off a single floppy disk has a windows 3.11-based GUI and includes file manager do delete those files. There's also plenty of Linux rescue disks out there, if you know how to use them.

But there should be anything to worry about, i have 2x120gb drives, first one has a 120gb NTFS partition, the other, i installed Ubuntu onto and it has a 100mb /boot partition a 2056mb swap partition, a 40gb / partition, and a 80gb fat32 partition. So remember, partitioning is your friend.

Hey thanks Boggy B. That's comforting. I think I'll try it out.

Anyone else with a conflicting opinion, please, post away. Not that I don't trust you Boggy B, haha.

Don't worry, i remember my first experiences with formatting. Shit-scared to do the smallest thing, now i format my Windows partition monthly.

Boggy B, thanks a bunch man. I formatted the partition like a pro. I just had to..ease into it I guess. I'll never be scared again!
