All programs on my computer began to crash with random error messages after several minutes to maybe an hour of use depending on the program. I tried messing with the memory but that seems to be o.k.. so I decided to reformat and when reformating I get maybe 1/3 to sometime 2/3 (2nd disc) before an error message of CRC error (9) comes up and then a promt A/: and I am not sure what I need to do. The computer is a Sony Viao laptop maybe 3 years old. thanks for any help I can get

Sounds like your laptop may be overheating. Getting errors after so much time is a good indicator of heat. Are you in a warmer climate or something?

CRC error's during install could be caused from heat. Especially if the hard drive is getting too hot. Also, make sure the CD is clean. A well placed fingerprint or pizza stain can keep the CD from being read properly.

run diagnostics on as much of the hardware as you can. particularly the hard drive.
