ram upgrade for Dell Dimension

I'm seriously considering upgrading my RAM.. but of course I want to make sure I know what kind of RAM to buy. I have a Dell Dimension 4550, 2.56Ghz, 512mb of RAM installed, and one empty slot. I just want to make sure I don't waste money on the wrong upgrade.
From what I gather, my PC takes DIMM PC2100 or PC2700 DDR RAM. Does this sound right? A review of a PNY Optima PC2700 chip said it worked in some guy's Dimension 4550.. so this sounds good. Anyone have any suggestions??
Also, does anyone know what the maximum memory a Dimension 4550 can take?? I've read 1Gb on some sites, but the PNY site says 2Gb. Also, since I already have 512mb, would I be wasting money buying another 512, if the max is indeed 1Gb? I don't want to skimp and only get 256 if I can get more.
Thanks!!

I would get the 512. The newer games LOVE a lot of memory.
I think the PNY chip will work. Some of the specialized ram with above average memory timings are more likely to be problematic depending on the board they are used in. If you go with standard RAM, it will almost always work.
If you're real paranoid about it, you can select compatible dimms for your board from www.crucial.com Just insert your Dell model and compatible memory will show up in the list.

unlike the easy-going motherboards of previous years, the current crop can be very picky about ram. its best if you match identical dimms. now, you might actually see your manufacturer and model number of your current dimm in windows or a software program. if you dont, open the thing up and pull out that dimm. model number and manufacturer will be on there.

I think I'll be real paranoid and follow that Crucial link, haha
Thanks so much Ion. BTW, is Crucial a decent brand? Maybe you'd recommend.. PNY? I don't know.

mixing brands at all isnt recommended. and most certainly not with pny.

Haha thanks Redwench, that was an obvious helpful thing that I didn't even think of. Or maybe I'm just too lazy to open the thing up again today.

Redwench I keep posting before your posts show up! Thanks for your colorful insight. I think I found a good deal on a Crucial 512mb, so I'll avoid PNY.
