Looking For a Mobo...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm in search of a motherboard right now, and from what I'm seeing they don't have one out yet with my specifications.

Supports AMD Athlon 266 FSB 1.4 GHz
4x AGP Slot
No RAID
3 or 4 184 Pin DIMM Slots (for PC2100 DDR SDRAM)

Anyone have any suggestions?

I was going to go with an Abit KG7 but I decided I wanted a 1.4 GHz instead.

Sometimes, what they list as the max speed, isn't. As in, when the board was made, that speed didn't exist, so they didn't have support for it then, but a BIIOS revision and it supported it. My Asus A7M266 said it supported 1.33+, and it does my friend's and my 1.4GHz just fine. It also has 2 slots for pc2100 which will support a max of 2GB RAM (do they even make 1GB RAM chips?).
There are newer chipstes like the SiS 730 and the VIA KT266 and the ALi MAGiK1, which may or may not deliver better performance than my AMD 761.

AMD Athlon™ Processor Recommended Motherboards

Be sure you get the correct ECN (Engineering Change Number) version of the board.

Dabom, you may want to look for a new KT266A based motherboard. It has all the features that you want, and they are fast too. Note the A... Don't get a normal KT266, cause they suck.

Also, don't worry about the max speed processor a board lists. The boards are made to operate with multipliers and FSB clock speeds, and as long as the board can reach the proper multiplier and FSB speed, then everything is great.

The Abit KG7 will do what you want.

yes they do

1GB DDR PC2100, I haven't ever seen one before, but I'm sure they're expensive.

Nova, so I can make the KG7 run with the 1.4?

Posted by: Outlaw

I have the abit kt7a-raid which is older and it supports the 1.4 when you flash the bios. I think it even supports it when its not flashed but you have to manually set the fsb and multiplier in the bios if you do it that way

and koosh, I didnt mean ddr, I meant pc133

Okay, thanks for the help.

I'm going to go with the Abit KG7.

I may be a bit late with this post, and you may have already made your purchase, but my recommendation is a Gigabyte GA-7DX. I normally don't recommend such an oddity, but I'm not horribly supportive of Abit products, and my new machine came installed with the 7DX. All I can say is that the board is freakin' sweet. All of the connectors are where you can get to them (even the memory). The only downside to the 7DX is that it's not built for overclocking fanatics. It does have on-board sound however (which you can disable although it does sound good), along with on board UDMA 100. I'm sure that comparitively, other boards can do the same, but I recommend this board because it seems to produce better results in benchmarking from most of the sites I've seen.
Check out the 7DX at www.giga-byte.com

Abit makes good boards. No integrated crap either, which is *very* nice. Especially for stability. All that integrated crap on motherboards nowadays do nothing but cause problems.

All my abit boards have been totally problem free. I'm probably going to pick up the abit kg7 sometime.

I looked at that motherboard actually, and it is very nice. I must have not liked something about it or I would have considered it more, but I can't remember now. Hehe.

Thanks, though.

If you can hold out for another month or so the nvidia "crush" chipset mobos should start hitting retail...........or try for Via 266A which should be readily available around the same time or sooner

I've yet to see Nova give bad advice, so if he says go with the Abit, then go with the Abit. Like I said, it's not my personal favorite, but then again, I think Nova always gets the deciding vote.

Get an MSI KT3 Ultra

i disagree with nova on the integrated issue in one respect. the intel integrated stuff does not cause problems if ur using an actual intel board. i have no doubts at all that integrated via and ali chipsets will cause trouble tho.

the integrated intel lanpro 10/100 nic chip works a hell of a lot better than any PCI based add on NIC that i have tried. and i finally tossed my sblive soundcard in favour of the integrated sound on the intel baords.

Integrated stuff isn't all that greate depending on what it is.

Built in LAN is good no matter what platform because it does not have a performance hit on your CPU. Built in sound isn't all that good though. Mind you, PC 97 audio codec was a CPU hog and just plain sucked eggs. The new audio solutions that are being built in are much better in that regard. Still, if your a speed freak, then you will not want built in sound. Luckily, it is easily disabled.
