starcraft battle.net problems

i have 2.2mbit cable (earthlink) set up on a lan without a router (i am using a router as a hub with all features disabled). my computer is not the server. in starcraft, my latency registers as 1g. i can join some games (about half max out on lag) and if these games have more than one other person in them i will lag heavily in-game, and if the game creator leaves i am dropped. however, with one other person the game is not laggy at all...when i ping battle.net it times out. a couple of my friends said something about the packet size screwing it up so i tried all settings on mtu on system mechanic 4 to no avail.
all xp firewalls are disabled.
any help? im kinda tired of 2v5c games..

How fast is your processor? How much RAM do you have?

The reason that pings to the Battle.net gateways time out is that Blizzard blocks ICMP traffic destined for them. You will need to run a trace route instead - at the command prompt, type tracert realm.battle.net (replace realm with useast or whatever). This will show you the ping times for each "hop" from your computer to Battle.net.
As for your lag-with-more-than-one-person problem, it's an odd one that I've seen quite often. Every time I've seen it, the root cause of it was an issue with the person's NAT router or Internet connection-sharing software (software NAT). You stated that your router is acting as a hub, however you said that you're on a LAN and that your computer "isn't the server" - does this mean that you have a computer running Internet connection-sharing software? If so, is it possible for you to plug your computer directly into the cable modem and see if the problem stops?
Unfortunately, in the case of a router problem, the only solution I've seen is to disable NAT or get a new router.

Shalome-it is a pIII 1066mhz with 640mb of RAM
the server has two ethernet connections, one to the modem (with internet connection sharing enabled), and one to the lan (it's running w2000 server)
and yes-i've tried it with the modem connected directly and it fixes everything, but i need to keep the server active and connected for web site purposes (i'm trying to avoid using that computer for sc)

That system is more than enough for proper Starcraft operation, and obviously you've determined that specs had nothing to do with the problem.
What Internet connection-sharing software are you using? Have you always had this Starcraft problem when using it?
Also, I'm just curious, why are you using that instead of the router? The whole point of the router is to have a dedicated NAT device so a computer on the network isn't burdened with performing software NAT.

i'm just using the default on windows..under the properties of the network connection
and yes, this has been a problem ever since we started using a domain
i am using this setup instead of a router because of the dyndns software, and the fact that the website i am hosting requires a domain in order to allow me to add a username/password to it

I'm not very familiar with Windows' ICS; the only thing I can think of that might help is forwarding ports 6112-6119 UDP to the computer running Starcraft. Let me know if you don't know how to do that.
At this point I'd probably e-mail or call Blizzard and explain what you've seen so far. You know it's an issue between SC and the Windows ICS so you can cut right to the chase.

awesome; forwarding 6112-6119 allows me to host a game without lag, but it still lags big-time when i join

No, Starcraft only uses those ports.
