ok...so I've been searching the internet trying to find a simliar problem, but I've come up short, so here it goes. I'm going to give you guys as much info on the problem as I have.
I just recieved a new compaq presario r3360us laptop for xmas and for all intensive purposes, its awsome!
BUT...every time I try to play starcraft, after about 2-5 minutes it just locks up my entire computer. It won't even let me back into windows and so im forced to reboot. Sound stops and graphics just freeze where they are. This is the only game so far that I seem to have this problem with. I can play doom3 or return to castle wolfenstein with no problems. Although I don't need a cd to run these games. Starcraft is so far the only game I've used that needs a cd while playing. I've also tried turning off all music and sounds while in game...no go. Does this in single player, multiplayer, and replays.
The wierd thing is, if I run starcraft with no usb mouse plugged in and just use the touchpad, i get no problems. It just occationally freezes for a second (still annoying) but then keeps going. It only seems to do this when the mouse is plugged in. Tried it in all usb ports on the comp. Also tried two different mice.
I also downloaded a hd temp monitor and it stays near 34 degrees celcius. So I don't think anything is overheating.
Another weird thing is, if I keep tabing out to windows, it seems to extend the amount of time before it freezes again. I was testing to see if my hd was overheating and kept tabbing out and tabbing back in. The game was staying stable so I thought one of my fixes had worked and so continued playing. But after staying in the game for about 2-5 min, it froze once again.
I have tried compatability modes, no good.
Directx and video card drivers are up to date
Could it be my ram? its new obviously. Haven't tried updating my motherboard chipset. Direct draw problem? Links to anything that could test for these? I have no floppy drive so I don't think I can use the standard memtest. But seriously, its starcraft for god's sake. Doom 3 chugs along and a 8 year old game freezes when I plug in a mouse...arghh!
system specs are:
windows xp home fully updated
p4 3ghz
512 ddr ram
128 shared radeon 9000 mobility igp
80 gb hd
15.4" widescreen
like I said, this is a brand new laptop. And the only game I even play is starcraft! if you have any clue at all, please help!
Thanks guys (and gals?),

Quick yahooin revealed:
1) make sure all powermanagment software is OFF, This sounds like your problem right here to be honest, if your screen saver is set for poweroff after 5 mins, that even explains why alt tabing works, Im unsure about the usb thing however, unless you play starcraft with 100% mouse and never touch the keyboard
2) You might try disabling the touchpad and trying the mouse, starcraft may not like 2 pointing devices
3) complete uninstall, scandisk,reinstall, patch.
4) StarCraft runs in 640 x 480 with 256 colors, try setting windows to this and seeing if it works (getting pretty desperate here)
This is pretty much all of what blizzard says that applys to you, your right though, it is wierd that you can run doom3 just fine, becuase in my experiance starcraft has been uberstable, but i havent played it recently.

I did another test actually.
I loaded up a replay and let it run while not moving the mouse. It ran fine for about 10-12 min. This was after a fresh reinstall of the game. At this point I figure maybe its fixed. So I take over the mouse and just start clicking around the screen. At first I get small lock ups...i'll click on a comand center and it will freeze for about 2 sec. Then the big one again. No errors or anything. All of this after I begin using the mouse again. So it sits idle fine. But when i take control....lockup.
AGHH!
I've tried turning off the touchpad, but that still does not fix it. Also tried setting it to compatability mode with win2000 and the lower resolution.....should i take this laptop back? i mean, if it will not run sc....other problems can't be far behind.

my mouse is a standard microsoft optical wheel mouse...blue
I did a few more tests last night before calling it quits and turned off all my power managment as well. I had already turned off everything that referred to being plugged in but went ahead and turned off all the battery power settings as well. I then also had to manually install a microsoft driver for my mouse. Before I was using the standard mouse driver as that is what windows thought was best.
So I tried it after both of these fixes...and it worked! Still froze for like 2-3 sec at times while using the mouse...but it didn't lock up! I can deal with that!
Thanks for all the help guys...I only played one game so hopefully this is a reacurring theme. If not...well...i may be back
