A couple of games won't run/install

Half-Life Counter-Strike and Spellforce both won't install on my computer.
With Spellforce, I click Install on the menu that pops up and nothing happens for a long time, so I have to do alt+ctrl+del to stop the process. Oh and it's always 'not responding'.
As for Counter-Strike, the problem is similiar. I try to install and it does nothing for a really long time, so I just open the drive, take out the CD and then click 'Cancel' to the 'Device not ready' pop-ups.
Another weird problem is that Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge installs on my computer, but when I try to play it, it gives me some error like 'the main launcher won't launch' or something and then I have to click 'Don't Send' on an error report.
Now here's the strange thing. All of these games work perfectly fine on my friend's computer.
My setup is
- Windows XP Home w/ SP2
- Pentium 4 - 3.4 GHz
- GeForceFX 6800
- 145 GB Hard drive
- 1 GB DDRII-SDRAM
- DVD/CD burner
- CD-ROM drive
- Floppy drive
- Lots of USB ports
- a Dell compy, brand new from Xmas

Sorry for the double post, but it turns out Spellforce and Counter-Strike just needed a lot of time to initiate, so they're good.
However, Yuri's Revenge still won't play, it keeps saying the main executable won't function. I've tried setting the compatability to Windows 2000 (since it's the closest to XP), but that didn't work.
Also, I just remembered that when I try to install Quake II, it brings up a menu of DirectX items that I have installed and it keeps saying Direct3D isn't installed, when in fact I've installed DirectX 9.0b (which has Direct3D I think) several times. Seems like it won't install without it.
