Half life and video card

HI
I am confused about video cards and need help with upgrading my computer. I have a dell 2400 dimension. 2.6Intel Celeron, 256mb. I have never changed my video card before and i assume i have an onboards graphic card. I have checked my details through device manager and it says
"Intel 845-G PCI Accelerated SVGA"
I am wanting to upgrade my computer because i have recently bought Half life 2 but my computer pauses at the loading screen.
Can anyone help.
