Windows XP Blank Screen after Startup (safemode too)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey everyone,
I'm taking a look at my friend's HP Pavilion ze1230, and it has Windows XP Home Edition. It starts with the screen that says "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully, bla bla bla, and then it gives options of safe mode (3 kinds), last known good configuration, and start windows normally. Well no matter which one i choose, they all eventually come to a blank screen. On start windows normally and last known good configuration, it will do the windows XP startup with the bar going back and forth, but after that it will just turn black, but the mousepointer can move freely. When i choose the safe mode, it will run through the commands, and then come to the same screen as before, except in 4 corners it says safe mode and at top it says Microsoft (R) Windows XP (R) (Build 2600). I ran the E-Diag, and everything was working fine. She doesn't have a boot disk because HP doesnt give them with their computers i guess. I'm not sure whats causing this and i dont know what to do from here, so if you guys could help me out i would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

without a full version of xp to do a repair, she will have to do a full restore from the restore cd. all data will be lost on the computer. if backup is required, youll have to slave teh drive in another computer.

thanks for your help. someone told me to try this, but i want to see your opinion on it. instead of doing the slave thing, i could just network the two together with a crossover cable. is there anything that would prevent this from working? the other person told me that since i have windows 98, the slave and master may not work. but if it does, ive taken the hard drive out of the laptop, so would the IDE cables hook up to it, or would i have to get a connection that will combine the two types of ends? Thanks

sorry, i meant i have windows 2000! i keep saying 98 cause i upgraded and im just use to it.

2k should see the drive, 98 would not.

well, for networking to work, her computer would need to be up and running properly.......

if a standard ide cable is compatable with the drive, thats what you hook it up to. if its not, youll have to find a cable that will connect it to a standard motherboard. whether thats firewire, usb, or something else.

alright, thanks. hopefully it works!

ok, the standard ide 40 pin cable did not fit. The hard drive is a 20GB IBM Travelstar, with a model #: IC25N020ATCS04-0. The pin pattern is a little different. It is total 45 pin, or 42 in two rows that does not have one on the middle bottom (so 41), and then a column of nothing at then end, then 4 more. Looks similar to this:

.................... ..
......... .......... ..

It says ATA/IDE on it, and the directions for attaching the jumper is to put it on the last 2 (column). Do i have to buy the jumper since there is not one on it, and also, what kind of cable will fit that? Thanks!

You can buy an adaptor (eBay) that will adapt laptop drive to standard IDE connections WARNING this includes the power connector & it's easy to plug the adaptor onto the drive upside down or missaligned by a couple of pins (because they are not 'keyed') and blow the drive !!..
Alternative (maybe safer) is to purchase one of those USB compatible 'empty laptop drive cases' (put drive in tin can, plug into any USB skt.)

Search on eBay for Drive case = 2.5" USB 2.0 Hard Disk Drive External Case (Aluminum)

Ok, now that i got it in and i can view the files, i am having a problem copying them. everytime i try to copy them, i get a message. the top bar reads "Error Copying File or Folder" and then the text reads "Cannot Copy filename : Access is denied. The source file may be in use." I made sure the files are shared, but i can't copy any of these files. Can windows 2000 not support XP files? They are both NTFS, so it wouldn't appear that it can't support them. What can i do to save these files?? Thanks!

sounds like you have file indexing or something else that constantly accesses the drive turned on. if you can find it, turn it off. if you cant, open it and try a "save as" command, and save it on the good drive.

Posted by: dk-s

i think that may work, but i am having yet another problem. when i try to disable the "File is ready for archiving and allow indexing service to index this file, it comes up with an error saying "An error occurred applying attributes to the file: filename. access is denied." when i try to open the file (in this case they are pictures from her digital camera, it will come up blank. im afraid it will save it blank. you don't think this is an administrative problem do you? i am an administrator with full control though. im not sure what to do. Thanks for your help

Posted by: redwench

i meant turn off file indexing/whatever-the-problem-program-is completely. not just disable it from the files. but save it to your drive and take a look at it. itll still be on hers.

but beyond that suggestion, your problem is beyond my tiny little brain. stalk an xp expert

i logged in as administrator, but that didn't make a difference. However, i found some other information out. originally, i could not gain access to Owner file (profile) under documents and settings. So i gained ownership. Everything else on the drive i could look at and i also can copy those files. I just cant copy anything under Owner. I hope this can give some ideas. Thanks

Well, I think you may have a problem with the file access authorization, and this could be that you have SIMPLE FILE SHARING turned on. It's something that Microsoft added, that seems to mess everything up if you don't access the files from EXACTLY the same owner, etc with another computer. I had a friend that could copy his files anywhere he wanted to, but, he couldn't view or execute any of them! It wasn't until I discvered that you must turn off simple file sharing, (Windows Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->View->Advanced Settings->Use Simple File Sharing (checkbox). Turn this off. This will allow you to control things like change the owner, etc to current.
