Computer freezes in Corel Draw and video games

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi guys !

My computer info:

Computer - Hp pavilion 523n

processor - Authentic AMD 1800 MHZ

Memory 480 mb AO:512 mb

Video Card S3graphics prosavage ddr 32 mb 1024x768

sound card - ( --- )

Operating System - Windows XP Home Edition 5.1

Problems I'm having - Corel Draw 11 & 12 ( graphic art software ) - most everytime I
use multiple layers of colors or manipulate basic fonts it will freeze on
me. It will also freeze on me if I have multiple fonts on the screen at the
same time. It will freeze sometimes if I go back and forth from magnifying and reducing
the size of the image I'm working on.
Basically - the more I do with anything I draw or write, the
more likely the computer will freeze. Video games freeze too, just as much and some web pages freeze.

What I have tried -

updated my graphics driver

changed the video display settings

reinstalled Corel Draw 11

Gave Friend Corel Draw 11 to install and it worked on her computer.

Checked for Viruses

Removed fonts into new folders

"msconfig" and took out all other programs

Went into Display adapters and checked my driver - told me it was working
fine.

Downloaded Service Pack 1 ( update )

Tried Reducing hardware

Deleted Temp. files

Reinstalled Graphics prosavage s3 driver

Went into S3 Graphics and downloaded display driver for prosavage DDR

Did windows updates routinely

Bought and installed a brand new Corel draw 12 cd

Gave Friend Corel 12 cd to install and it worked on her computer.

Bought and installed an Asylum 5200 Geforce FX 256MB AGP 3D graphics card
and did all the recommendations.

Completed a Non-destructive recovery

Completed a Destructive recovery

Tried multiple things above all over again with new old and new video card.

This is an error message I would get often on my computer -

error message with old video card

"The display driver for the S3 Graphics Pro Savage DDR seems to be
responsible for the system instability"
"Driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation.
Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update."

error message with new video card

"The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing. Please
check with the device manufacturer for a driver update."
" The display driver for NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 seems to be responsible for
the system instability."

I have since uninstalled the new graphics card. I've emailed HP a ba-zillion times, but they tell me to contact Corel. ( I just registered with them and my password won't go through for some reason so I'll have to try again later. ) Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you ! - Amy

ok, put the new card back in. and corel probably cant help much, as this problem is not just occuring with that program. check the temperature of the cpu and motherboard. if they are normal, proceed to:

download the latest drivers for the 5200 and park them on the desktop, dont install them. ditto with your monitor drivers, chipset drivers, and anything else of that nature. download a driver cleaner, then go into the device manager and remove all the devices you have new drivers for. run the driver cleaner then, or after reboot, according to its directions. reboot and let windows detect the hardware and put in basic drivers. then run the installs for all the new drivers and reboot.

if the system is still unstable, it might be the windows install or the ram. you cant do much with recovery disks if theres something wrong with a file on there, so hope for a bad dimm. www.memtest.org

Hello Cynderblue,

I am having the same problem and it is very anoying. If anything solves your problem, please post in this forum. As for now, I am looking into heat related problems as a cause of system instability according to the AMD website. Good luck.
