Angry Sound @ my Playstation 2

Okay folks, I've got some problems with my Playstation here.
I bought it a little while ago for 25 bucks from a friend. It was his sister's, and she never used it. FIgured it would be fine, albeit it was a first-gen system.
Well, it is beginning to have some issues, wondering if anyone can help.
1st problem:
Already posted this somewhere else. Bought a memory card, it came with it's own software. MUST load software to use memory card. Upon putting the CD in, I get a Disc Read Error (DRE). What gives?
2nd problem:
I figured the lens was dirty, so I attempted to use a generic CD lens cleaner CD. Upon puitting in the CD (Should read as audio CD), I get a DRE.
3rd problem:
Half-life CD will not work. DRE.
4th problem:
Put some DVD's in, attempted to read them for a while in the browser meny, started making terrible grinding noise, still read the CD, no DRE, never played the DVD.
I'm not expecting some miracle fix (tried fiddling with CD read speed/diagnostic setting as well, didn't work), and if it's schmanked, it's schmanked. I only paid 25 bucks, so I can't be too sad, though I will be a bit dissappointed. Any ideas, whatsoever??

it sounds strange, but try opening up the rom and cleaning and then re-greasing the rails that the lense runs on. I had an endless DRE problem and this helped a lot 'cause what was happening is that the rails were dirty causeing the lense to vibrate as it moved thereby shaking it around as it tried to read therefore: DRE.
Also, did you clean both lenses or just the one on top? If you squeeze the left and right sides of the black plastic thing around the lense it will lift off and you'll see that the upper lense is suspended on a copper colored wire. if you VERY CAREFULLY lift this lense you will see there is a larger lense beneath it. On my PS2 this under lense was the one giving me problems, clean it carefully with a very small *clean* paint brush if you have one. Lemme know if it works for you.

I'll have to give it a shot. I, myself, did not physically attempt to clean the lens. I only put a lens cleaner CD in, which would most likely only clean the top lens.
Now, I've never opened a PS2, so I'm not necessarily familiar with the layout. Is the lens housed in it's own seperate casing? I'm sure I"ll know it when I see it. Is there a particular grease I should use?

I just used some white electronics grease, should be able to pick it up at any hardware store for a couple bucks. Note that opening the ps2 will void any warranties it may be carrying, but if it's no longer under warranty you've nothing to lose.

Well, some DVD;s work just fine, it just started making that grinding noise.
No need to worry bout the memory card. Gave it away.
I think it may be a lens problem, I'll try what was prescribed. Something may have happened to it, as I carried it home in a backpack. It may have higgled loose or something then. That may mess up the lens, right? And would fiddling with the disc speec/diagnositc setting on the system menu help at all?
