phone line hostage

How do I protect my computer from hackers taking over the phone line and charging overseas calls. I have SBC DSL. I'm a little nervous about it because the phone company at one time tried to make us pay a 400.00 (computer generated calls) phone bill before I had even hooked up a pc in the house. Now I've noticed a daily issue with the phone ringing twice and no one is there.

Can I do anything in particular to protect myself?

Thanks

hackers cannot take over your phone line to do anything. that would require physical access to the phone line. if you mean prevent them from placing software on your computer that will dial up, as long as you dont have a modem capable of dialing out, thats not an issue. if for some reason you have such a modem installed, just set in your dialup properties or modem properties to disable automatic connects.

of course, using an antivirus and firewall, along with an updated OS will prevent the issue entirely.

Also, your ISP or phone line provider may be able to block premium rate lines for you, have a talk to them about it.

You can also usually ask your phone company to block overseas calls as well. They might make you pay a small fee for the service, but sounds like your peace of mind would be worth it.

Also, you could get cable or DSL internet access, and not connect your computer to the phone line at all. That way, nothing could dial into or out of your computer's modem.
