Panasonic Q No Disc error

Hi all.
My husband and I have had our Panasonic Q Gamecube for about a year and a bit. Recently, it has refused to read any sort of disc at all - games, dvds, cds - of any region. Upon inserting a disc, the Q tells us that there is no disc and to please insert one. Very rarely and randomly, if we reset the game several times, a game will eventually load and seem to play fine until we either switch games or turn the machine off. We thought that many sudden resets, or leaving the machine on for extended periods, may affect something else in the machine, so we decided not to find out.
As the machine was imported and according to Nintendo, probably technically illegal to sell in the UK (they have banned the sales of import Nintendo products in many shops here in London), there are not many places we can go to ask why this £380 console has unexpectedly turned on us. We have contacted a handful of people we know who have modded or repaired all sorts of consoles for us in the past, and nobody will touch the Q with a 10-foot pole.
Even though the console is not that old, we thought perhaps the laser might be dirty and decided to try a DVD lens cleaner as a last ditch resort. The Q would not even read the cleaner disc. It is not as if we abused our Q, it was kept in a cabinet with our other consoles, away from dust or smoke, and I would often even catch my husband inspecting it daily for smudges or scratches. It looks stunning amongst its shelf-mates, however unfortunately this is all it can do at the moment.
Determined to keep this gorgeous looking console a part of our collection, I scoured forums and messageboards everywhere to no avail. All I could seem to find were posts from 2003 that read something like "omg the Q is so sexy and so totally awesome!!!!111" which is not much help. One of my searches led to this forum's archives, where someone had a similar problem, but did not mention whether it affected all discs, or just games, or what happened in the end - was it fixed? Put in a closet? Thrown away?
We have an NTSC cube and a fully modded xbox, and so it is not as if we cannot play games or DVDs, but I would really like to keep the Q if it can be salvaged. I feel misled and cheated by Panasonic at the realisation of having spent so much money on such a flaky and unstable piece of machinery, and for once again having fallen for the hype of fashion over function (reminds me of my iPod, too).
If anyone out there has any kind of input about this situation, we would be most grateful. Otherwise, it looks like our rubbish bin is going to have a tasty snack sometime soon.
Cheers
