Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware, including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding more than 50 ways spyware can enter your PC. The worldwide SpyNet™ community plays a key role in determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, and updates are automatically downloaded to your PC so you stay up to date.

1. Common sense
2. Firefox
3. Zone Alarm Pro

There are reports of this "new" anti-spyware app causing Mozilla Firefox to stop working:

Microsoft Spyware Beta stops Mozilla from working - MozillaZine Forums

That is not true. I use FF and MS's Anti-Spyware program and my computer runs great. Well for now until too many people switch to FF and then that browser becomes unsafe. Welcome to Technology where things constantly change.

What is not true, that there have been reports of Firefox stopping working after running the M$ anti-spyware app? It is true and Mozillazine is not the only forum I have seen the reports. Just because it hasn't happened on your system doesn't mean the reports are not true.

I sure don't trust the M$ anti-spyware app. It misidentifies entries placed by several anti-spyware measures as malware themselves. IE-Spyad puts sites on the restricted sites list and the M$ program "sees" certain of these as malicious as well as HOSTS file entries placed there by legitimate anti-spyware apps or entered manually by users.

Use it to your heart's content, but don't say you have not been warned.

I personally Like Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware for my spyware problems. S&D makes it very easy to undo anything that is done to the system through S&D, while Spybot is keen on finding malicious registry entries... Thats just my personal opinion. I did download MS Antispyware Beta which essentially a copy of Giant AntiSpyware, and I found it to be quite unsatisfactory. S&D, Adaware, or ZoneAlarm found twice as much junk as MS Antispyware did. Hopefully, the non-beta version will be a little bit more adware sensitive. I used MS AntiSpyware and FF on my system is working perfectly. I wouldn't be surprised ,though, if Microsoft used this free program as a ploy to reduce FF users and have everyone converted back to the old ways of IE- related BSOD's and viruses.

I think it's safe to say that most people who use FireFox would realise that it is better than IE. I doubt many would switch back, it's just that some people don't know that they have a choice.

Indeed. And Firefox would still be safer than IE even if it was as big. ActiveX is like walking in school with a kick me sign on your back.

Well, isn't that special.

The reason I use "M$" is to save typing. I'm 48 and have four children. Just trying to help people, but I sure don't have to.
