Well it all depends on how keen you are on ripping apart your ps2 to fix it.
It's likely that your problem is cause by one of two things. 1) your lense is dirty or 2) the lense is improperly angled.
Both are fixable, mind you the second is a very tedious process.
To clean the lense you'll need to take the main cover off and the tray covering the rom drive (don't forget to take out and cd's frim the drive first). You'll see the lense in a small black plastic cover. You need to remove this cover because there are two lense surfaces to clean. To take the cover off, squeeze the left and right sides of the black covering on the lense gently and lift away. Now you should be able to see a lense suspended by a thin copper colored wire. Do not use a liquid solution to clean the lense, I reccommend a small soft brush to remove the dirt. So dust off the upper lense and then *VERY CAREFULLY* lift the upper lense a TINY bit and you'll see there is a focusing lense underneath, you need to clean this lense too, same way, carefully and without a liquid solution. I also don't reccommend using q-tips.
Now if this doesn't do it for you, you have to re angle the lense to play dvd games. again you need to take off the main cover and the cover for the rom. you'll see a white cog near the back of the rom drive, this cog angles the lense. Mark where it currently is then turn it all the way to the left. Drop in a dvd and hold the cover of the rom in place and test it. If it doesn't work, move the cog two clicks to the right and try again. Repeat until it reads the DVD game. Note that it is possible that once it starts reading DVD games that the angle may cause to cease to read regular ps1 games (not a technical point, just seemed that way to me).
I had to go through this hell as I too bought a second hand PS2 and had the same kinds of problems. Had a huge celebration when I finally got the bloody thing to work. Just takes some patience and good judgement.
NOTE: I don't reccommend using q-tips because they are somewhat likely to leave behind tiny bits of cotton and they could possibly scratch the lense. I suggest not using a liquid solution on the lense because it is very likely to leave a residue behind making your problems worse. If you feel you must use some liquid, use a lense cleaner and test it on a clean piece of glass to see if it leaves any kind of residue.
Hope this helps, post if you have any success.
