My "high end" processor runs at 1.1ghz

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jojo

hi,

as you may remember, i recently bought the AMD athlon 3200xp cpu from g4 technologies online. They said it has a clock speed of 2.2ghz. however, i have checked the speed of which it is running at and it is at 1.1ghz. as it stands, my system is only barely faster then before when i had pentium 3 1000mhz

i just emailed them saying they had sent me the wrong processor, and they replied

"Hi,

Can you please check what the sticker says and if it says xp3200 then you have not set your Motherboard to the correct FSB.

Thanks
G4 technologies"

if my fsb is already set to highest or something, then i will check the sticker, because i have a terrible clipping system on my heatfan which is hard to undo

but first:

is there a way of checking if my fsb is wrong safetly, and how do i adjust it without the cpu exploding or something.
my mother board is the asus a7n8x-x and the box says it supports 400mhz fsb

Download SIS SANDRA or CPU Z software. These software, maybe can give you the info you 're looking for?

Can't help you with the adjustment though.

What motherboard do you have?

Posted by: jojo

ok downloading....

Posted by: jojo

cpu z tells me

core speed 1094.1mhz

multiplier x11.0

FSB 99.mhz

bus speed 198.9mhz 1.

voltage 1.680v

ive highlighted the FSB , have i found the problem there?

also the code name is BARTON, isnt the word 'barton' only applied to higher end cpus?

Posted by: goranpaa

Not entirely shure about the BARTON, but I think that's a high end AMD CPU.
Sorry to not be of any real help here.

And that frontside bus speed seems a bit low to me.

But the other guys here at the forum, will fore shure be able to help you out.

They know a lot about such stuff.

ok no problem

Found out this about a Barton 3.200 xp

AMD Athlon XP processor 3200+ (Barton core) 2.200 GHz featuring 640KB of total on-chip cache memory - an increase of nearly 70 percent over previous AMD Athlon XP processors! .13 micro core, 400MHz Front Side Bus and QuantiSpeed Architecture! Requires a motherboard that is Athlon XP optimized. Processor in a box with heatsink and fan. Featuring QuantiSpeed Architecture for Rapid Execution of Applications! More Info & Product Specification

Maybe you got this by misstake?

Posted by: jojo

atcually, im 90% sure the sticker was white, so i dont think thats it.

Posted by: goranpaa

What does the box that came with your new CPU say?

Posted by: redwench

why would you email the retailer before making the proper adjustments? your fsb setting in the bios should be 200.

Posted by: zorg

ye what red said, Go to the bios and to the cpu speed setting and just make it ihigher and check at boot what the mobo picks it up as.

Posted by: jojo

it was just a small box with no pakaging,
ill try what redwench said now.

Posted by: jojo

ok ive done it, its running at about 2191.3 mhz

thanks guys

by the way, the cpu tempertture has gone up to 45 c (111 farrenheit)

is this a safe temperture?

Posted by: goranpaa

Rather O.K. Your CPU is a rather "Hot" one! Is that under load?

Posted by: redwench

as a maximum temp under load, its fine. if thats the idle temp, you might have a problem.

Posted by: goranpaa

If you want very good cooling, try Thermalright XP 90 or XP 120. And a good fan like Sunon or Panaflo

Posted by: zorg

The Barton chips do run pretty hot for some reason, well most of the AMD socket A chips run hotter than the Intel ones. The AMD 64 series seems to be running cooler at least
My AMD64 3500 Winchester should arrive tomorrow...
/me BOUNCES

Hi Zorg!

Sounds exiting!!!
Let us hear, when you installed it.
Will be a nice upgrade for your PC!

45C is about average for a barton running with the stock hsf. I always kept mine under 40C overclocked, but that was with an aftermarket hsf.

Posted by: jojo

ok then i feel re-assured

and i dont know what "underload " is

im busy using the processor when its this hot, so its not idle

Posted by: goranpaa

She meant "Under Load."

Posted by: jojo

ahhh theres 'sticky' about this problem i had on the AMD support site.

3200 should have a clock multi at 11 and an fsb @200

temps should peak at 50-55C under load

and under load means you are using it fully, 100% cpu usage etc.

Posted by: Superfly3176

Athlon xp's run hot. Mine ran at 60-70C all the time, now its very rare that my 64 gets over 35C.

Posted by: zorg

WOOOT my 64 3500 is in and running sweeet. Will check how she goes within the next week or. Running pretty cool 25C idle ( I Think) not at home atm :P

Posted by: goranpaa

Hi Zorg!

Congratulations!

It's always nice to find out that you bought the right stuff!

Very nice temp. What cooler?

Posted by: zorg

Stock cooler, but im not overclocking and I have to add its slightly freezing here atm :P uk is NOT the place you go for a tan :P
