Boot-up restart headache

Hi

Running XP on a fairly new (5 months) machine.

I'm running Windows password protected, but recently when I turn the machine on and get the password entry screen up-- before I can type in my password there's a click and the machine restarts. After it restarts I get the blue "recovery" disk checking screen. When the whole process has repeated and I've (finally) entered my password, and windows had booted up properly, I get an error message teling me that the system has "recovered from a serious error"

This is happening about 1 out of 4 times I turn the darn thing on.

Any advice as to causes/ remedies?

Many Thanks

either windows is seriously borked, or your hard drive is going bad. run the hard drive diagnostics first.
