try restarting your computer and when it restarts keep pressing F8 and then when the options come up select command prompt. Put in a start-up disk like windows 98 etc... change over to A: then type fdisk.exe then you shouldn't have any proplems deleting your partitions and reinstalling.

Put the CD in the CD Rom and boot with it. I believe what you have done is put the disk in with windows running to do the install. In that case, when it reboots it won't let you delete the partition because it has copied setup files to it. When you boot with the cd, you can then delete the partition and format.
However , if you want to do it the old fashioned way: How to format in MS-DOS
Be aware that even after you format this way, you will have to boot with the XP CD and go through the format and creating partiton there because you cannot run XP setup from DOS.

How do you boot with the cd? I thought i was booting with the cd.

if it boots into windows, youre booting from the hard drive. if it boots into windows setup, youre booting from the cd.

there are actually two operating systems on the computer now. but there is an option to go to the windows setup and i still can't delete the partition.

Boot to your WinXP cd. Check your bios to make sure that your cd drive is set as the first boot device.
