What's generally better when looking for RAM for a gaming PC?

Let's say I have unlimited USD, a motherboard and processor that can support any kind of RAM, 4 empty DIMM slots (which I believe is always the case with newer computers), 8 GB maximum memory and I want the best RAM for gaming available.

Now, I've researched RAM for a while and found that the fastest kind is RDRAM (at 800 MHz), but you have to buy it in pairs and the most one could have is 2 GB worth.

The other kind of RAM that looks most promising is DDRII SDRAM and the best of it seems to be Viking's DDRII SDRAM that comes in 2 GB sticks, but has a speed of 533 MHz.

So what would be more efficient? Or does it vary? Or do you guys know of other RAM makers that would be even better than these two?

Oh and I'm currently playing really high graphic stuff right now like Half Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, World Of Warcraft and such.

the 533 is actually 1066, which is the same as 1066 rdram.

youd probably be best off getting ddr2 from a major manufacturer (not viking). given no monetary constraints, of course.

The type of system you have will determine what kind of memory you can use. RDR is dead. It's on older Pentium 4 motherboards. DDR2 RAM is for newer P4 systems and for the most part, it's not any faster than DDR because of its higher latencies. (Currently)

Your platform will have more influence on gaming. In which case an Athlon 64 system is best at gaming. DDR with low latency is best. 2-2-2-5 timings at 400Mhz non-overclocked is the best you can do.

Note however that it's more important to have a lot of RAM than it is to have less lower latency RAM. 512 MB's of low latency stuff loses its appeal if your game has to goto the swap file a lot.

Latency is how long it takes to communicate with something, right? Because that's what they call it for communicating with an MMORPG server.

yes, that's correct.

I's say the best ram for gaming, running the ram at stock speeds, would be the Mushkin 2-2-2 special. it runs at 2-2-2-5 timings at 400mhz DDR, which is the stock speed for A64s. If you want overclocking flexability, I'd go with some PC4000 Mushkin or Kingston. Corsair also makes very good ram.

ram latency specs determine how many cycles it takes to locate ram and read it and write it.

You mean this?

PC2700 isn't rated to run at 400Mhz with those timings. You need PC3200.

actually, I meant this.
