Ipod Problem

My son's Ipod has been on for two hours and all it displays the apple logo. He can't turn it off, and when it finally did turn off it was because the battery died. When he tries to turn it back on again, the apple logo is displayed and flashes. When it dies again, it goes back the same as before , when he tries to charge it all it does is display the apple. Can anyone give us any advice as to how to fix it?
