hp pavilion

i do not know if this forum can help me but hp support sucks so here goes. i have an hp pavilion laptop and just recently i am apperently getting no power from the cord to the hp. no power light on the laptop but the green light on the cord shows power. any ideas? this has happened on and off recently. could it be the battery is completely dead? i am not a geek so i know little about computers in general but i am learning fast. any help from the smart people out there would be greatly appreciated. thanks, timmo
