Need help selecting CPU

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Thanks for having this forum. This is my first post.

I'm having to make do with:

Motherboard Vendor Hsing Tech Enterprise
Chipset Model SiS730 CPU to PCI Bridge
Chipset Vendor Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS)
BIOS Model AMIBIOS 062710
BIOS Vendor American Megatrends Inc.
BIOS Id 62-0425-001437-00101111-071595-SiS730S-M810LR
BIOS Date 07/15/95, Release 04/25/2001 S

and a 800 Duron CPU.

Main purpose of system is 3d gaming.
What CPU upgrades would be compatible? (Sempron? Athlon?) My existing CPU is too slow for current games. My MB uses socket A. It has both PCI and AGP slots.

I want to go economy on this, but what is my range of choices?
I plan to build a nice system fairly soon .

Your best bet IMO is to tough it out. If you really can't wait, a socket A vanilla Athlon might yield some helpful improvement and you could probably get one real cheap on Ebay.

My guess would be your board will only support up to a 1Ghz Socket A Athlon. To be sure, goto the SiS site and check the last BIOS available for the motherboard. It should state the maximum CPU supported in the release notes.

yeah, in order to upgrade from that setup, you would most likely need a new motherboard, which would also probably require a new PSU, and of course the new cpu. this is assuming that you have a nice graphics card already.

upgrade cost (my best guess) $300 USD at least for a good system.

I'm unable to find the info on their site. or American Megatrends or Hsing sites.
http://www.sis.com/index.html

BTW, what specs determine the MB/CPU compatibility? besides socket type

Posted by: goranpaa

The speed, for instance.
The mobo can just take a CPU with a certain max speed.

In my case for ex. the Asus P4P 800 SE, can take maxiumum 3.2 gigahz Pentium 4. 800hz front side bus speed, 478 socket.

But if you want to find out stuff about your own hardware, download SIS Sandra.
And use the information modules.

Check the motherboard manual and see what multipliers are available on the motherboard. It will probably tell you right there what clockspeeds it can support.

CPU-Z and CPUID are also very handy.

I have Sandra, everest and diagnose and I still can't find the max clock speed allowed by the MB
..cough. noob.. coughr..>
I don't have a manual. The MB was made before Madonna reached puberty.

if Sandra is reading the board correctly (PCChips M810LR), it looks like it can support up to an Athlon XP Palomino 2100+, but will NOT support a Tbred of any speed

Posted by: Elfraj

Q1 How can I make sure the palomino 2100+ would work? $35-75 on Ebay.
Q2 what happens if I install it and it's not supported by the MB? Can I wreck the system? Or di I just waste time and $50?

Posted by: redwench

1. look at the label somewhere on the motherboard to verify that it is what sanda says. then visit the manufacturer's site and see exactly what processors are supported for your board. purchase a cpu that is supported. http://www.pcchipsusa.com/prod-m810lr-v80.asp

2. a is possible, b is more likely.

Posted by: Elfraj

I found the Manual. From 2001

Quote

"This mainboard has a Socket- A CPU socket for AMD K7 processors...........processors currently supported by this MB.... Athlon 650MHz-1.2Ghz, FSB: 200 MHz."

There is nothing less than a FSB 266MHz CPU in the Athlon XP line available on NewEgg or Zipzoom. I may have to go to a salvage yard.

What happens if I use a CPU with a higher FSB speed? (Just curious!!)

Posted by: Bix VT

it would probably not boot.

Posted by: redwench

assuming everything else will work, it might also just run at the lower speed.

the manual is 4 years old, the site will be much more up to date on what is supported.

Posted by: Elfraj

What do you think? Found this digging around the Net. Correct socket, FSB speed and CPU speed .

Thanks for hanging in there with me. This has become an educational exercise for me. I hope to be asking you about current system specs soon, since I'm planning to build a good gaming rig fairly soon.

Posted by: redwench

its really not much of an upgrade, anything below around 2000+ wouldnt be worth the bother.

but it should work fine.

Posted by: Elfraj

Thanks for the help Red!

Posted by: Bix VT

we'll be here whenever you decide to guild a gaming rig. there are plenty of guys around here that know how to do that on a budget
