(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Can anybody give me some advice on how to reformat my hard drive, it got that nasty adware program where everytime i browse the web it goes to search for home page. I have an external cd rom and everytime i go to set up of windows 2k, it's load the drivers but after i click enter to continue set-up it doesn't read a cd-rom. Any ideas on how to reformat or what? I hate this computer.

thanks

Have you tried getting rid of the adware by other means?

For a simple format, make sure everything is backed up, set your BIOS to boot off CD, put in your Windows 2000 CD, and it'll do it for you.
If you want to do it manually, make a windows 98 boot disk, boot off that and type
Code:
format x:
At the prompt, where 'x' is the letter of the drive you want to format; usually 'c'.
If you want to modify partitions (Which you don't, if you don't know what it is) type:
Code:
fdisk
Then reinstall your OS, the boot disk has CD-rom drivers so if you can't boot straight off the CD, run setup.exe off the cd after booting off the floppy.
If the OS asks you to format the drive again, then say "yes", it will change it to the NTFS file system.

Did your hard drive come with any software?

I have a Maxtor 6Y120PO 120GB hdd

It came with software that performs the formatting process in 10 seconds. I have also used it to reformat my HDD 3 times and there has not been a glitch.

Reformatting your hdd is not easy if you cannot boot from CD. My old motherboards' BIOS said that it could boot from CD but it would not.

Just make sure that your CD drive is listed as 1st boot device.

go to my help site http://geocities.com/openlance then click on Downloads. Then download GDisk.
Im sure its zipped, then unzip files to a formatted floppy which you should label Gdisk.
Make sure you dont want anything on your harddrive as this tool wipes everything! THere are some errors tho with Compaq Pc's. Also make sure to change BIOS boot order to
1)floppy
2)CD
3)Hard Drive/HDD
