I am sick and tired of jumping thru hoops with my IBM/Win 98 os. Why can't I load my stock Win 98 on this IBM Aptiva. I suspect the BIOS. Can I find a download that will let me throw the IBM version into a drawer?

you shouldnt have any trouble loading the retail version of 98 on the drive after a fdisk and format. what is it doing or not doing exactly?

It tells me that I have to insert the proper cd rom.

you have booted from a 98 bood disk, and fdisked and formated first? and then you try to boot from a 98 cd and it tells you that?

It will boot from the IBM/Windows 98 recovery disk, but not from the stock Windows 98 disk. Yes I did fdisk and format. It seems to recognize the IBM version but not the Microsoft version. The files where I am having trouble have a far different path than in Win 98 (Msoft version). Since the support at IBM for the old Aptiva is and has been nearly nonexistant I wanted to go to the "pure" (oxymoron I know) Msoft version because of the availability of support. It is a spare machine that I can play with so I don't have to worry about failures and loss of data. I put a used hard drive on it and cannot get the dog to work.

you can try some other bootdisks, and see if theyll let you get into the normal windows setup. but if its picky about floppies, you might have to take a shotgun to it.

Where would be a good locale for a download?

edevol,
Wow. Aptiva.. been a while. It's booting off a diskette... can't you just run windows set up from there? I have heard of version of Win98 that came without the option to boot from CD. As for IBM versions vs. MS version. You may have to rename MSDOS.SYS to IBMDOS.SYS and IBMBIO.SYS from IO.SYS. But that might have been just ps2 systems... try it and let me know.

After booting off the diskette, not to Windows just to the 98 startup 3.5, I tried to do the fdisk and format and load the Windows 98 and it tells me to put in the right cd rom. When I put the IBM version in it will load but not boot to Windows and gives a message vmm32.vdx needed bla bla bla. I never had the system crash, bought in 1998, so I never had to use the IBM recovery disk and some files on it seem to be corrupt in the .vdx, or something close I don't have my notes at hand. I think something in the bios tells the machine not to accept the non IBM/Windows operating system. Unfortunatly my success at keeping the machine clean never let me test the recovery disk. I did replace a few files over the years due to Norton not being able to clean a file. When in DOS you can see files in the IBM system are not in the same path as in the stock W98 os. I cannot load the stock version to go into dos and change MSDOS.SYS etc. I would like to find a bios and flash the machine and see if something non-IBM will (BIOS) let me load this stock W98 and 98 SE on this machine. I would like to use it for a video recorder/dvd burner or PVR. Where am I goofy on this?
