DVD Dual-Layer Standard May Disappear Soon

Cooltechzone has some info on DVD Dual Layer media and how it may go the way of the dodo.

Dual-Layered (DL) DVD writers may be affordable, but the question of concern is the media prices. The price per DL media averages out to $10.00, which is shockingly high. We talked to manufacturers at this year’s CES about prices and what they thought about DL media in general. The replies we received were far from positive and disappointing. According to a few blank media providers, DL standard may not have a bright future ahead of it. The reason is the upcoming Blu-Ray and HD DVD standards that are supported by world’s top most corporations.

Due to the aforementioned standards, DL simply appears to be redundant and more of a filler in the industry until Blu-Ray and HD DVD emerge in mass quantities. As far as prices are concerned, you can probably expect them to drop $6.00 to $4.00 per disc, but not much lower than that. Of course, prices are dependant on customer demand, but that was the general price figures we received during our meetings.

Hell I looked everywhere for a DL disk last weekend so I could burn a DL ISO. Stores aren't even selling them. And Best Buy is like 45 minutes away.

Anyway, I wouldn't use them regularly. Can you imagine making a 10$ coaster?

If the DVD-R DL had come out, the cost would be much less than $10 per disc and it would be a very accepted format until we see BluRay and HD-DVD burners available retail. But instead the +R DL thats very poor write quality, incompatable and expensive were dumped on us.

I remember the first time i saw DL discs for sale, i almost fell.

I ordered some from Taiwan ages ago, just for kicks, they were $50AU for 5 discs then, and they still haven't dropped much. Unless they can start selling them for $1 a piece on a spindle, they aren't going to get very far. There aren't many things that you need a 8.4gb DL disc for, that you can't use 2x 4.7gb SL discs for.

It's the 2.88mb floppy drives all over again.

Well just about every DVD movie out now will not fit on a single layer disc, unless you compress it, which causes quality loss. Ive backed up my more important DVDs and it would be nice if I didnt have to compress them. Would save time as well.

They made a 2.88 floppy drive??!

Yeah but they didn't catch on because they weren't backwards compatible.

Yeah, the only reason I need one is because I need a DL DVD to burn the 64-bit version of SuSe 9.2 pro. For some reason, the ISO is dual layer sized.

I might just mount the ISO image and do a network install.

Dang, that would be a flaw..I don't think I'd use one today anyway. Gotta love USB flash drives.
