what is the best firewall on the market today?
Do all computers come with diagnostics tools?

Best firewall? What kind are you after? As far as i see it, you have 3 options;
Software: Stuff like ZoneAlarm and the XP SP2 thing.
Hardware: Buy a unit specifically for firewalling.
Computer: Buy a mediocre computer and make it into a proxy.
The "Best" one would be one that you make yourself. But, of course that is also the hardest to do.
It really depends on what kind of system you want to protect, if it's just a single computer, go for the software, if it's a WAN go for the unit, if it's for a business or large-scale LAN go for the proxy.
But it all comes down to what you want to spend, and how much time you want to put into it.

I used 'Black Ice' for a while and although it worked OK (nothing fancy) for a long time it recently screwed up.
I switched to the McAfeee firewall, because I already use McAfee for virus scanning and I figured it would be more 'integrated' and hopefully take a little less ressources. The verdict is still out ...

As for your second question, I would say most "name brand" computers come with some kind of diagnostic suite. And for the "Home-Made" computers, there's lots of free diagnostic tools on the 'net.

and a lot of the free stuff, including firewalls, avs, and diagnostics, are far superior to the stuff that comes supplied with the computer. forget any software, including an OS btw, that comes "with" the computer. its mediocre at best, usually pos level. the better free stuff is usually equivalent to the separate commercial programs as well. you just need the patience to look for it.
