Monitors - LCD vs. CRT

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

BigBruin.com has some comparisons up between LCD and CRT monitors. Worth a read if you're considering a new monitor.

As the technology has improved and the prices have come down, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors have rapidly been replacing CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors on desktops around the world. ComputerWorld first reported that LCD sales would surpass CRT sales for the first time in 2003, a lead that it didn’t hold for good. But according to DisplaySearch, a flat panel display market research and consulting company, the sales of LCD monitors regained the lead over CRT sales in the third quarter of 2004,a lead that it should eventually hold for good.

The question is why choose LCD over CRT? There are several pros and cons to consider, and a few items will be considered in this Tech Tip, such as: Price, Size, Image Quality, Energy Consumption, Personal Comfort, and Response Time.

Well, I held out a long time, but I could never go back to a CRT monitor. I'm using the Samsung Syncmaster 172x and it's superb for first person shooters.

Still, if you really look you can notice slight blurring action on objects on the walls or ground. But you have to be purposely looking for it. And it doesn't seem to hurt my frag count either. Movies look awsome as well.

I hear there are some coming out soon with a 6ms response time. That might be the final nail in the coffin for CRT's. Assuming they aren't exorbitantly priced.

yeah, the performance is now up to speed. but the price would have to drop, or lifespan extend for me to purchase one. my backup monitor is like 7 years old, still works fine. its one thing if something becomes obsolete after 3 years, its another if its unusable.

Hello

Well, i have seen these at work and i am not impressed at all, you can see the dots of the lcd monitor, since lcd monitor are at 0.29 dot pitch and crt are at 0.24, i would also like to say that they are very slow performance, since my work involved looking at maps and scrolling the colour map up and down on the screen, although the graphics card was fast, but the screen was smeared and jerky, gave me a headache, so i asked them to swop for a crt, the graphics was then very smooth on screen and easy on your eyes. I would not recommend one at all. The dot ptich for the monitor at work is 0.26, and is a 17inch monitor. now the one i have at home is a CRT perfect falt screen, 22 inch, and the image on is perfect, and i can paly all my games in 1600 x 1200, LCD monitor have not got the dot pitch to handle this resolution, that is the resolution i use all the time, it is the recommended resolution by the company that made the monitor. If i had a choice and money i would go for a plasma screen, although they are slow at moment, but that is due to the computer that controls the screen, not the display.

Andrew

i like flat crt monitors more then anything...with the lcd monitors if htey are not positioned just right you will get a distorted or darker picture...with a crt you can look at it from any anlge...so i am never goign to buy a lcd monitor

I like crt monitors but when you are moving them about say going to a lan party or somthing its very hard too move them. I have a LCD and CRT both are 17" so im ok i bring my LCD too friends house and leave my CRT at my house

the dell 2001fp has finally dropped below $500

Well, I am attracted to the idea of the much smaller size and weight. I have a decent 19" CRT and it's great. But it weighs a ton and takes up alot of room. I have also heard that the LCD's don't last as long as the CRT's will. Any truth to that? and .29 dot pitch does not exactly make me want to run out and get one.

Posted by: gustav213

Well i have an LCD 19" monitor its k its a viewsonic 16ms response so tis pretty good, but still nothing can beat a CRT the only reason i ahve an lcd is because i ahve little space where i jsut moved for the time being and also to take to lan party's or friends house.

Nothing compares to LCD {CRT is like its predecessor Monochrome}. I am looking for advise for a new system. Currently, i am using sony vaio pcg-k12p [its about 1 1/4 year old, exactly processor but insuffiecient desktop area for multiprocessing. Does anyone have advise on what would be an exellent notebook -LCD-at least 60gb-offering wide area desktop area for multitasking. I normaly run 5 programs on adverage.

To answer that question, between having a firewall, spyware programs running, & trying to use the Internet as little as possible in terms of buying items, I haven't had a single problem.

To answer to the question of LCD vs CRT, I have more space and leg room for my PC, that I'm on right now, than I would with my old CRT.

I have an LCD monitor which works great and doesn't take up much porer or space, but it does get annoying sometimes when I'm watching movies because the colors change then you look at the screen from an angle. But its got a much better resolution than the old CRT monitor.

Hello

These LCD screen are very delicate, my friend bought one, and all that happen was the screen fell onto the keyboard, and the glass inside the screen shattered, this screen never worked again, now if you accidently drop a crt monitor the screen is not as easy to break as that since the screen is 6 mm, or 10 mm thick, thats why crts are so dam heavy, but in the lcd the glass is only 1 mm thick, like i used to have a anti glare screen for my 15 inch monitor, but this broke, the glass was only 2 mm in thickness, i paid 60 pound for that anti glare screen, all i did was moved my finger into it the screen forgetting about the anti glare been there, did not hurt my finger, but the glass broke into about 20 pieces, i acccently dropped my 22inch monitor one time, from a height of 2 foot, onto a carpet floor, it bounced, and went bang with very loud noise and shook the floor violently, causing the lights on the floor below to fall of the roof, and the monitor did not even have a dent in it, and i am using it now to write this document.

Hello

I would also like to say that i read that link article about LCD vs CRT BigBruin.com has some comparisons up, and i would like to pick a few points out that they mention, well from a health and safety point of view, CRT are better for people that have migrian headaches, because LCDs use Flourescent back lighting which this type of lighting agrevites the headache, also my friend has an LCD monitor and this monitor is to bright on his eyes at night time, he has the brightness levels of the monitor down at minimum, during the day the monitor is ok, now with the same time of lighting in his room, if he puts the CRT on at the side of the LCD the CRT is not as bright and does not glare at night, so he useing his CRT at night and LCD during the day, also you have similiar magnetic emissions as with CRT, it is just on a different frequency of magnetic field, the magnetic field from a CRT is X-RAY, but of a LCD it is Ultra Violet Radiation, as well as the Radiation of the tube itself, since those types of lights work on a spark gap method, where the electricity flows from one side of the tube to another as a electrical spark, so the Radiation will be far more intense but on a different frequnecy as with CRT.

After many years of having CRT's I just got my first LCD before Christmas and I'm totally blown away by the clarity and the colours. *drools*

I also notice a big difference when I use my other comp that has a 17" CRT, so much so that I'll be replacing it with an LCD shortly. I'll most likely get an LCD for springy's comp too. (hey, I'm doing my part to keep the economy going :P )

Specs:

The Samsung SyncMaster 960BF is a 19-inch analog and digital TFT-LCD delivering a response time of 4ms (G to G), 700:1 contrast ratio, 300cd/m2 brightness, 1280 x 1024 resolution, 160/160 degree viewing angle and scanning frequency of 30-81 kHz horizontal and 56-75 Hz vertical. It features MagicTune, MagicBright II, MagicColor, MagicZone and MagicRotation.

Most people make the mistake of not having enough lighting on/near their computers, especially at night time. This causes the screen to look alot brighter then it actually is and causes severe eyestrain.

You can visit some lighting specific websites and see their recommendations for lighting around computer workstations. One thing that they did mention was lighting behind the monitor itself to help ease eyestrain.

Not sure where that came from, it has long been known that an lcd is better from a "health and safety point of view" Here is what bigbruin says about it

I dunno about that migrane stuff either, I had them for years and the best thing I ever did for them was get an lcd, I tried my roommates CRT and my eyes were having a hard time after 10min and that was at 100Hz.

I was pro crt and anti lcd for a long long time until one day my crt broke and the only one the shop down the road had in stock was an lcd screen. My conclusions, the only difference i can actually notice is that its flat and bright compared to my old crt.

there no doubt are many little differences that technophiles can notice, i have no problem believing just about everythng everyone has put in this thread, but would just like to make the point that to the average person all they are going t notice is that LCD monitors are flatter and brighter than their crt counterparts. and take up less room.

lcds a year ago werent britghter, they are now, they have the response time up to speed and the only thing left is the colors, 6-bit vs 8-bit panels. and the price, which is acceptable now.
