XP access permissions removed for drive root

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

I have a laptop to try and recover on which (it transpires) the necessary access permissions to the root C drive have been removed.

As you would expect on startup (this machine was a work XP machine hooked into the company network) the machine will reach the point at which user name, password and domain are entered but as all that remains is 'list' access to the files it falls over immediately afterwards.

I've yet to attempt to either boot from XP CD and repair or reinstall (to either the same or a different location) but would welcome any suggestions on other avenues to explore.

Needless to say discussions about user-backup of critical data will be hapenning here in the very near future.

Regards

Andy

assuming this is occuring in the admin account as well, youll probably have a better chance if you slave it to another computer and try to access from there. that wont help fix it, of course. but you can do data retrieval that way, if the problem was in the OS. if the files themselves are locked, well.......

after retrieval, just format the thing and start over. there are probably other things screwed up in there as well. if this notebook is owned by the company, dont give that user access to the admin account
