d2 freeze at startup

d2 freezes at startup, i have the iwill dvd266 motherboard, with 384mb of ddr ram, pentium 3 933mhz and geforce 3 video card. diablo 2 freezes at startup when either in the firery diablo 2 screen or it will get to the character screen and freeze. the cpu usage is at 100% i have got it to upgrade to 1.09b but that is as far as i got. the motherboard is a via chipset apollo pro266 which supports ddr. visiontek geforce 3, tdk 24x cdrw, 10x affrey dvd, 40 gig western digital harddrive, 80 gig maxtor harddrive. Operating system is windows xp and windows 2k, all of the latest drivers have been installed. even formatted my computer twice to try out both win2k/xp. i just want to play my game. can anyone please help.

Install order seems to make a big difference in D2. Did you install the latest directX before your video card driver? If not, try reinstalling the latest detonator driver. www.nvidia.com
The latest directX should be on your driver CD that came with your GF3. You can also get it at www.microsoft.com/directx if you need to.
Also, make sure you have ther latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers for your Apollo Pro 266 chipset. Very important usually with the latest hardware. www.viatech.com
