Understanding Portage.

OK, i've finally got the Gentoo installation working, and i'm stoked. Now i want to understand it better, more specifically, i want to understand portage better.

Now, i know that it uses the source code of programs, and compiles it automatically to be crafted for the options you set during the installation. Does that mean you can grab any old program's source code and tell it to emerge that? Seems too good to be true.
The way i understand it, there's shell scripts in the portage tree for each program that need to be used, but that's just from the skerrics of information that i've picked up from over the place, i'm probably completely wrong.
That being the case, how would you go about emerging something that isn't on the tree? Would you have to make a script for it yourself? Or just put up with the non-optimised install?

And I thought Portage was when you carry the Canoe on your head because you're too scared of the rapids ...

I doubt you will find too many programs that aren't on the portage tree. In the rare chance that it ever does happen, you can do it the old fashioned way. I highly doubt you have any problems though.

Heh, i guess i stopped looking at the handbook once i was in the environment.

I was thinking more of drivers, and more specifically, drivers for my modem. I could never get them working the normal way.
