SP-2 troubles with NAV

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

this is my first question -- have mercy!

I have XP Home on a Dell Dimension 8200, with Norton Internet Security, NAV 2004.

I installed SP-2 yesterday with the help of a more tech-savvy friend, following all of the instructions about cleaning up and checking for spyware before running the download. It installed fine.

HOWEVER... I am working in Word on a book for my child, with simple text and about 15 digital photos that I was copying into the text from my photo files.

When I was working on this last night (after installing SP-2) I started having bizarre trouble. The text is under 2 kb. The photos run from 400 kb to 1.2 mb.

Two photos were already in the draft. BUT once I added even one more picture, the hard drive began to rumble, things froze up while NAV notifications came up about "waiting for virus scan of ~ files" (temp files of various sorts) and the size of the saved document rocketed from 13 MB to 275 MB.

So opening and closing the files now takes many minutes, and the system appears to be scanning for viruses frequently and for long periods, even though this is all stuff in Documents. And the document simply can't be that big, and once it's open it looks like a clean, simple copy of what I have been working on.

If I delete the new pictures from the text and re-save, it reverts to a reasonable size, although it still seems to be slow saving or opening, and rumbles a lot. But if I re-paste even one photo, the size sky-rockets again and the system grinds to a halt.

Any ideas? Other functions seem OK -- IE and Outlook Express are working normally, and I can view and edit my photos as usual. I don't game or do anything else complicated.

And yes, I have run auto-update for Norton about 4 times since the SP-2 install to make sure I really have the update.

thanks for any help!

yup, nortons had major issues when sp2 came out. they do like to make very oddly bugged software for some reason. anyway, although i believe the issues have been fixed, it might not be possible to patch the problem on a running system.

you will probably have to remove all norton programs completely, then reinstall them. youll need to use the removal tool found on their site to do it, you cant completely uninstall from your control panel. download the new copy, dont use the old cd.

you do realize that you can turn it off when youre doing something that annoys it, right?

Hi Redwench,

thanks very much -- yes, I do know that I can turn off NAV -- and I did -- but when I did, even though it said NAV disabled and showed a red x through the icon, it still appeared to be active. Wierd, huh? I guess it's just further evidence of a need to uninstall and re-install.

Is there another program that might request a virus scan?

I will try what you suggest -- I don't have NIS and NAV 2004 on disc, as I upgraded to it online, so I'll have to check with Symantec to make sure I'll be able to re-install once I remove it.

Incidentally, do you have ANY idea what is hiding in my book that makes it appear to be 275MB ?

if you're anywhere around here, enjoy the coming snow...

youll need your activation code. this may require tech support, since a new product key is generated for downloads.

well, if norton is going to try to scan word every time you add something, its quite possible it could have hysterics over anything. it might be controllable through settings, although if your installation is as old as you imply, it might be a good idea to reinstall anyway.

keep in mind, even though you cleaned up your xp as you should, you still could have corruptions in there since its not a clean install. if a registry cleaner wasnt on the list of things your friend ran, do so before you reinstall nis, along with an xp repair install. a format, xp install and full update is the best way to do it, although few people want to
