for a few months now ive been havin trouble with windows, im runnin XP Pro. Its weird becuase ive never seen anything like it, but anyway. The problem is anytime i boot up/restart my pc and i log into windows all the icons and the taskbar start flashing and then just dissapear and wont come back. Nothing will work i cant even get the task manager to come up. After about 5-10 restarts everything will either show up normally or i can get the task manager up, ill look in the Processes tab and explorer.exe wont be there. So i go to File > Run > explorer.exe and it makes everything come back up again.
So umm, how can i fix it? id really like to reboot my pc and stuff its been on strait for almost 3 months now... it cant be good for it. i hope i dont have to format but if i do i guess it would be too big a deal, i partitoned my drive so everything is seperate from the windows partition. anyway, please help

Well shoot, sounds like something is crashing explorer. Wow... complicated. First things first, run a virus scan? Run Norton system checker, make sure your windows files are not damaged. Also, when your computer run starts a program called drwatson. (start >> run >> "drwatson") this will inform you or memory trap errors. Did you install any hard or software any time before this started happening? If so, remove the hardware. If software, uninstall it and see if you have a restore point and restore it.
But after all that, I would get in, back up your data and format reinstall. I have little doubt the some system files have been damaged, if only through three months of random crashing. Even if everything above fixes your problems, one of these damaged files will come back to haunt you a month down the road.
best of luck, let me know how this works out!

Instead of norton you could use the command line program sfc. But, it kidna sucks. But it's free with windows. You can get the details on how to use it from microsoft's site.

Well I agree that something appears to be crashing your explorer.exe when you boot the PC.
This "something" could potentially be an unwanted program, so you could always try rebooting in "Safe" mode, and then running a Virus scan (Like TrendMicro ) and some spyware scans (I usually run both Ad-Aware and Spybot)
I've got to say, though ... I agree with Red. If I were in your shoes I wouldn't have alot of trust in my PC at this point and I would probably just Re-format. But that's me and I format all the time ...

i forgot to say before that i had run virus and spyware scans already, but that was before i got net back and could update the programs. I decided to run a virus scan again to see what would happen and it did find somthing, a virus called Trojan horse PSW.Agent.2.AY attachted to file Windows\system32\_kwuiex.dll and sincei ts some all important file i cant move it there are like 2 other viruses but i their on system files to. So i guess this weekend when i have time ill format. man its gonna be hell i hope i can find all my sound and video drivers and things before i have to format.
Bleh anyway thx for the help
