Computer randomly shuts off

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm running a computer that I built last week. I usually am very good with computers, but this is a problem that I have never encountered. First some statistics...

Soyo KT880 motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
1 gig of PC3200 RAM
Dual nVIDIA GeForce FX5200 graphics cards (running three displays)
Windows 2000 Professional
Ultra 400 watt power supply

The problem is that the computer will boot up fine and run for quite a while. But it will randomly shut off and restart. I've checked the internal temperatures and it isn't getting hot enough to where the Anti-Burn on the mobo kicks in. I've reformatted and reinstalled everything thinking it might be a software problem, but it still does it. Any advice on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

- Chris

Carp,

Were you grounded when you installed everything? Video card isn't over heating is it? Got enough power from the power supply? How about hard drive? Is that over heating (maxtor is well known for it's over heating).

good luck,
-Daniel

I have had this same problem. Try and get another machine to test components. My problem was my processor because I got it for cheap from an untrustworthy company (SMK Superstore/APCB Computers). When tested in another computer it crashed. You may also be having a driver problem, so if all of the components prove to be well working in another system, check out those.

Where did you get your processor from, and does the computer only restart in high-load situations such as gaming or video encoding, etc.; or does it restart no matter what? With a lower end graphics card (GF 2 MX), mine only restarted in games. With a higher end (GF 6800), it would restart for no reason fairly quickly so you may want to also test a cheaper graphics card.

The hard drive came out of an earlier build and has about six months of proven service, it's a Seagate. The processor came from TigerDirect, which I've always known to be decent. I suppose the graphics card could be overheating, but would that cause the whole system to reboot? And no, it doesn't just turn off in high load situations, it's totally random. Sometimes it'll reboot when I'm only running iTunes and Gaim, for crap's sake. I'll try the graphics card idea though. Thanks for the help.
