No one can join anything of mine!

Okay, I got road runner just 2 weeks ago. I can join games, browse sites without a hitch!

When people try to join things of mine however.......it doesn't work.

I have tried to run a CS server, a starcraft game, and hell I even tried to make my own webserver and people couldn't view it.

Somethings a little bit odd here and it is getting frustrating. I am not running a firewall and I can't see whats going wrong.

Help please!

Although you are not running a firewall, your ISP may be. Try contacting them and see if they are, and if so, to open up the ports you need for gaming (e.g. 6112 for Battle.net, 27015 for CS, etc.).

what about the web server?

Posted by: uh...ok

I think that would vary depending on whoever is providing it...

Ask your provider.

I was hosting it from my computer

Posted by: uh...ok

Yes but you connect to the 'Net to your ISP through a port, don't you?

Someone help me out here, I'm pretty much assuming for the most part!

I haven't got a clue what Road Runner is except that it might be an ISP.

If your IP address is 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x you are out of luck. Nobody can see those addresses on the internet since the internet filters them. Those are "virtual" addresses.

A little more information about your computer, OS, ISP, network, etc... would be helpful.

Road Runner is a cable modem ISP, correct? In which case running a web server would most likely be against their terms of service, anyway.

Posted by: uh...ok

That might just explain it...

are you sharing the connection on a home network? (ie do you have more than one computer connected to the cable modem?)

how is it connected? does it go directly from your PC to the modem attached to the cable wire?

Posted by: Blackknight

yes it is routed....I done it myself but it could be my demise
so is there anything I can do if I am behind a router?

Posted by: Kdr Kane

Still waiting for some specific information about your computer, network and router.

What kind of router are you using? Some routers have a built-in passive firewall. There may be instructions on your user's manual on how to run a server from your own computer.

On my Linksys router, all I needed to do was to manually open up the ports that the server will be using via the Linksys control panel. Check your documentation carefully, or post what kind of router you have as well as the operating system you are using, so we may point you to the right direction

I forgots myself......

Well I am on a 3 computer routed network using RR cable modem through a NetGear RP114 Web Safe Router.

My primary computer is a P3 866mhz Gateway with 128mb ram using a ethernet 10/100 card.

The thing is I don't know if people could join my servers with the router off. Before we had the comps networked I believe I tried to make a server which people tried but couldn't join

Oh and my OS is WindowsME

I went to my routers little setup doohicky on my browser and under advanced setup there was an option called 'PORTS' in there you had multiple blanks and at the top the headings were:

Start Port | End Port| Server IP Address

I am thinking thiks is maywhat I need to fix?

Just give me instruction por favor!

Okay, I've read a PDF manual for your router model. I noticed that it has a similar option to my Linksys router. Check page 5-6 of your router manual.

Connect to your router by going to 192.168.1.1 (or whatever IP you use to connect to it) ... on your router's main menu, go to Advanced, then PORTS. You'll see a table with two columns, the left one asking for the port number and the right one asking for the assigned IP for a corresponding machine.

For example, if CounterStrike uses port 6000, then type out 6000 on one of the left columns, and right beside it type out the IP address you assigned to the machine that will run it. Same thing applies to any other game you wanna host that people connect to using IP addresses.

If you wanna run an FTP server, open up port 21 to the IP address of the machine that's gonna run the FTP server. Same thing if you want it to be a webserver, this time use port 80. The most common ports are listed at the top the same menu screen where you specify the ports.

I also noted that in the same page, Netgear has placed a warning that says:

Note: Many residential broadband ISP accounts do not allow you to run any server processes (such as a Web or FTP server) from your location. Your ISP may periodically check for servers and may suspend your account if it discovers any active services at your location. If you are unsure, refer to the Acceptable Use Policy of your ISP.

So your mileage may vary...

I read all this from a PDF manual I downloaded off Netgear's website, and I don't even have the product itself, hehe ... maybe you will fare better since you have the written manual right there Good luck and post back on your progress...

well once again the wonderful people at OTS save the day.... I will put 20015 for my CS port and test it. I am not gonna use it for a webserver no more. I will test when I have time....bleh lunch is only an hour....

Posted by: Blackknight

It didn't work. I put in 27015 which is the CS server port! I gave them the ip 192.168.0.2 and the port number and they couldn't connect. $%@#$%@#$%@#@#$

I dunno if you're having this problem only with Starcraft.. but could this be part of the issue?

Road Runner ** FINAL UPDATE **
Battle.net Team
Blizzard Entertainment
Fri Sep 21 09:50:01
The ISP responsible for the USEast Battle.net and Diablo II Realm has
completed a thorough investigation of the connection issue some Road
Runner customers are experiencing. This issue is being caused by a
"flapping" route advertisement by Road Runner (see below for
a explanation of this term).

Blizzard is attempting to contact Road Runner to resolve this issue.
All affected Road Runner customers should ALSO contact Road Runner
Technical support to get this issue resolved quickly. Inform Road
Runner Technical Support that "the BGP routing table entry for
24.29.32.0/19 is flapping and is being suppressed by some peers.
This is causing a connectivity failure to useast.battle.net."

-The Battle.net Team

Information about routes and "flapping" routes:
Routes or routing information is sent between different systems to create a "roadmap" of the Internet. This allows information between different computers to travel via the best path (called a route).

Flapping simply means that the routing information (roadmap) is continuously changing. This can cause serious problems on the systems responsible for directing traffic (routers) due to the high volume of traffic this creates.

Flapping routes are typically caused by a mis-configured router at a specific ISP. A (usually) minor change is required to fix the issue.
