Cable vs DSL ?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi my wife and I are trying to make a decision on switching from Roadrunner Cable to SBC DSL. I have heard that DSL is slower but I am wondering just howmuch slower? My wifes mom has DSL and when we use her computer it dosen't seem to be any slower. If I switch to DSL I will be saving $20 a month. Which would be a break (for a year anyways) that we could really use. Thank you for any information you can give us to help us decide. It is very much appreciated.

the maximum speed of dsl is slower. however, this speed is generally stable, unlike cable. you would only notice a difference if you generally spend a significant amount of time uploading or downloading large files.
your cable and dsl providers can give you the details of what maximum speeds are for your area, if that is of interest to you.

My DSL is faster than cable was, but you can get cable service that is very fast and some that is mediocre. Most of the time, cable is capped at a certain rate depending on how much you pay for the service.

Sounds great. I think I am gonna switch to DSL to save us some money. Thanks for the lightning fast replies.

I think the provider is more important in your choice than anything. DSL for the most part is a lot slower generally, but there are lots of other factors to concider.

You should check how much bandwidth you can get. If you're too far out of range, you might just barely be faster than 56K dial-up. It depends on how far you are from the DSL main line.

For gaming, Cable is also usually better. My ping times are around 80ms faster on average than when I had Yahoo DSL. Also, they make you sign a year contract, so if you don't like DSL, your out 200+ dollars.

If you don't download many big files, it may well be worth it. I however occasionally download some big stuff, and it's just way faster on cable.
