HELP! PRESCOTT IS PRESHOTT AT 73c IDLE TEMP!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Gandhi

GREETINGS.
My 3.2 ghz 800mhz fsb LGA775 Prescott CPU idle temp is 73 degrees celcius with the default intel fan & heatsink. IS THIS NORMAL?! Shouldn't it be like around 50c?

Thanks in advance ots homies.

o btw. it was idle at 85c before I scrapped off the default thermal pad and put stars 700 25% silver thermal paste on it.

way to hot should be 45ish. is your hs/f installed correctly?

Posted by: Gandhi

it is installed correctly.

Posted by: Gandhi

lol if I underclock the cpu to 1.6GHz it goes down to 55c idle.

... and no I did not have it overclocked before, thats not why its so hot.

thermal pad that came from the factory?

you may want some AS5.

quoted for truth.

How is your case cooling? A lot of the time, a properly cooled case will drop CPU temps a lot.

Posted by: Gandhi

3 intake case fans on sidepanel
1 rear exhaust case fan
2 OTES rear exhaust fans
2 Power Supply exhaust fans
1 Stock intel heatsink and fan
1 motherboard chipset cooler

Assuming the heatsink is fitted properly, it may just be a faulty reading.

try flashing your bios to the latest version supplied by your mobo manufacturer, I had a similar probelm with my A64 3200. it was reading as 52C in the bios when the actual temp was 35...a bios flash solved the problem.

already did that though. I think the problem is i put a tad of thermal paste on the heatsink base, when I already had enough on the top of the processor. I took the heatsink off, and whipped it clean, then stuck it back on, and it went down to 61c. That is still a little hot though.

Thanks again, keep coming with more suggestions though.

Have you tried an alternate temperature probe?

Posted by: Gandhi

yeah i tried an external monitor, got the same readings

the fact that the temp went down when you reinstalled the heatsink tells me that it isn't installed properly. Take off the heatsink and clean all the thermal paste off of the CPU and heatsink with rubbing alcohol. Follow these instructions to apply the thermal paste (scroll down to the part with the P4 and A64). You only need a very small amount of paste, but from what you posted above, it looks like you put too much.

Did the original heatsink come with a thermal pad? Did you clean that off completely before applying thermal grease?

dumb question, but is the fan spinning?

Posted by: redwench

his computer wouldnt be running if it wasnt........

I don't think you need a fan running anymore with all the fanless hs/f's.

Posted by: redwench

the last cpu im aware of that could run with just passive cooling was a p3. a lot of chipsets use passive, but not the cpus. unless someone forgot to tell amd and intel something.

Are the fans spinning?
yes, of course, heh. I can not start run the computer when they are not, it just beeps and shuts down.

Yes, I sure did.

btw I will take it off again and follow those instructions. Thnx again.

Posted by: Gandhi

i read the instructions, and that is pretty much exactly what I did, except I smeared it more so it covers the entire raised platform of the cpu cap.

if you still think it would help if i did it again, exactly how they did it, i will go ahead.

thnx again

you only need a very small amount, even thinner than the thickness of a sheet of paper.

There's many like that, i don't know if you'd call them totally passive due to heatpipe technology but they dont need fans.

http://www.swiftnets.com/

mcx6400-v not sure if it requires a fan, i run mine with.

Posted by: Bix VT

yes, but those are not stock units...

Posted by: redwench

the MCX6400-V requires a fan.

as for the other:

"A System fan is required for enhanced heatstink performance with better airflow."

which means use at your own risk without a fan. neither one of those are truly passive cooling, they both tell you to use fans.

okay, this may seem a bit stupid, but I found out what the problem was. Actually I found this out a few weeks ago, I just never followed up on the post. Somehow, I had recieved a virus called IOSTD which makes your cpu run at 100% load all the time wtih no exceptions. I was trying to play demanding computer games in opengl while this virus was present, and it was raping my cpu. That is why it kept overheating lol. Norton 2005 did not detect it, but I found it in the system processes and was curious why it read that this IOSTD program was using 99% of my cpu. I restarted in safe mode and deleted it from my system files, and now my cpu idle temp is 35c!!
