PS2 won't read DVD's

Hi,
This PS2 is not mine, it is a kid in my youth group. The PS2 is full of dust, and I would venture to say they are pretty rough with it. But, I would like to help them out, if possible.

Ok, here is what is going on.

It loads and plays the games (All of them, blue and DVD) fine. Sometimes it locks up, but not all of the time.

It won't even recognize a DVD. (No Data message.)

Music CD's just get stuck. They won't play at all, although it recognizes the CD is there.

What is going on? This does not seem to be a DVD lens issue (or the DVD games would not work.)
Games I tested - Fifa 2005, GT3, Burnout.

Thanks,
Matthew

Ok first of all most ps2s(the chunky kind) start to fall apart such as not reading discs or not reading DvDs or Cds.Thats my only help for you.Ur prety lucky that it still reads games.

i had the exact same problem, and if it is dusty like you say it is, open it up and vaccum it out. dont do a half assed job either, your ps2 will notice. The farthest i went was to opening up the black case inside the actual ps2 case that the lens and stuff is in. I vaccumed it all out and then voila it worked fine. I also cleaned the lens. if you have a lens cleaner disc try that before you take it apart, and if it doesnt work, once oyu have it open so you can see the lens, take a small piece of tissue or toilet paper and softly rub the lens. Hope this helps.

Unless, of course, the warrenty still applies to that PS2. As I say most times, if it's not working and it's not the user that is at fault, simply phone Sony up to get it fixed. If it is due to maltreatment or the unit is past it's warrenty date, see what you can do yourself.
