raid problems

hi, i have an amd 2800, 1 gb ddr ram on windows xp.,a sil 0680 ultra
133 medley ata raid controller
pci slot 7 (pci bus 1 device 9 function 0) i have 2 drives on my main pc and this new hd on the raid system. the drives are not shared. just after windows has started up everything seems very slow,ie aol takes ages to load.
if i disable the raid controller in device manager and reboot everything is fine, as soon as i enable the driver again and reboot, everything is very slow for a couple of minutes. can you give me any ideas, many thanks.
